Bell Shorty Solid Helmet

Bell Shorty Solid Helmet

Has anyone use one of these helmets? I know they are not bicycle helmets at all but I would think you would get a little better head protection if you did. These are very light weight not as light as a bicycle helmet for sure. But this model does have air vents that you can open up.Just wonder if you would look like a fool with one on.I did see a video of a guy wearing one on his catrike.and it was not bad looking at all to me anyway. And they do came in a lot better color that I like. They can be a lot more money than some of the bicycle helmets you can get and they also can be a lot cheaper too.The money part is not a problem for me I just want a better looking helmet than most bicycle helmets has.Any input on this is welcome and thanks.

I use the old bell lexan helmet, or whatever it was. The white thing with red stripes. As someone once put it: "how can you tell a prof from MIT..." At least that is the helmet I own, I rarely use it because I don't feel the need, but when the need arises I want something that would work. I have also thought of the Black Diamond helmet. The only downside to any of these non-bike helmets other than possible legal hassles, however rare, is that they may not have the correct softeness or impact forgiveness built into them. BUt then the foam ones aren't credible on most counts either. If I was looking for a cold weather helmet I might try one of those full face BMX or downhill ones.

Hi

I haven't bothered to try and find a link to them but the use of the word "solid" in the name bothers me (assuming this means that there is no or little ventilation and/or weight). Getting a hot scone is not my idea of fun. I ride with a Bell Sweep and would buy another for sure. The http://Helmet.org is a good website to review for ideas.

With you on the appearance of that helmet vs bicycle helmet. Ventilation in warm weather would be my concern. Our heads are a huge heat sink. At least my bald one is.

I think an unventilated motorcycle helmet is a super idea for bike touring !

Get some matching leathers too....

Black diamond helmets are ventilated. Not all weather is hot, some places rain form one end of the year to the next.

A guy who lives in my 'hood rides into town wearing a motorcycle helmet. He looks ridiculous, IMO. I presume he does it for safety. Funny thing is that he does stupid things, including riding against traffic.

Idiots that they are, some people think that's safer.
