Go ride now. Dwight Smith would want it.
Touring lost a true veteran on Friday 30 Sept 2011 when Dwight R. Smith, author of One Mile at a Time (Cycling through loss to Renewal) passed away at the age of 90 in Fort Collins, CO. Dwight started his journey at age 64 destined to ride the entire perimeter of the contiguous 48 states on a bicycle as an alternative to feeling sorry for his fate of having lost three beloved family members ( a bicycle in lieu of the vodka bottle). Dwight was a proverbially elegant gentleman, college professor, outdoorsman, wildlife biologist, but most importantly a humble humanitarian whose disarming smile made everyone who contacted him feel better. His book detailing his perimeter ride is more about people and geography than it is about bicycle touring but hey those are primary elements of touring too.
I'm sure others here knew Dwight and or his book and thus I felt compelled to record his passing as an inspiration to us all. Tom
