waterbottles get dirty
when I ride my waterbottle gets very dirty and it isnt nice to put my mouth on.
I have fenders but its dusty out there and stuff still happens. Is this odd, or do you guys just eat the dust?

Dust? Never noticed. It's the mud that feels a little gritty in my mouth. First swig gets rid of it. Second swig washes it on down.

seriously though, its the inside that I like having a brush thing for after a while, especially if you use gatoraid or anything like that. I try to wash em up iwth the dinner dish soapy water.

That's why I use Ozarka bottles with the little cap on a pivot that covers the end of the spout.

you can find bottles with a flip cap over the nozzle. I have one from Nalgene.
Target market is Mountain bikers , on tour they don't get that dirty.
you're not pressed for time, on a bike tour.
stop, wipe the nozzle off on your shirt, before you drink from it.

G'day
I have my Dreaming Tour in the planning stages ... one thing for sure on that ride is days and days of red bulldust as it is known locally ... plus some sections will require heading out with 30 litres of water on board ... last thing I am going to be worried about is a dirty water bottle me thinks
Learnt to do a quick wipe and move on.

Why are your bottles getting so dirty? Are you riding on gravel roads? If it's just a bit of dust which you might pick up after a day on the road, wipe the top of the bottle on the hip of your cycling shorts ... and then drink.

If it is the third water bottle on the bottom of the down tube, I would expect that fenders to prevent that. Now if you are fenderless then I would get a water bottle with a cover over the spout.

Put the bottle you drink from on the handlebars. Handlebar mounted bottle cages are great. In other cages just put bottles you can use to refill the one on the handlebars.

Dirt is generally non-harmful, unless you're riding in a brownfield. Then, you've got bigger worries than the dust on your water bottle.

One time while mountain biking through cow country on a dirt road I rode through some fresh patties. Some got thrown onto my water bottle, which I discovered when I put the nozzle in my mouth. Yuck! That was the only time I wished I had a bottle with one of those caps. Normally I don't worry about it.

While riding in South Korea, I had a bottle bounce out of its cage. It hit the ground and bounced into a rice paddy, I think it might still be there! Thier fertilizer is a bit different than ours.

Actually the only time my bottles get dirty is on a crushed limestone bike path after a dry spell. When I think of all of those dogs and horses running up and down the trail...... Well I don't like to think about it.

You have fenders? Wipe the dust off the bottles with your hand/sleeve/glove. It'll be fine. Run through a cow-pie? Watch where you're going next time.

This was my worst looking water bottle. (not on a tour bike for sure). End of ride though..... so didn't have to drink out of it...

Just think about how much your inhaling.....What's on the bottle is nothing.....I used to eat dirt when I was little.....It didn't hurt me......MUCH!
