Am gearing up for Lewis & Clark Trail this coming summer. Anyone interested in hooking up, give me a holler! Departure around 1st of June from St Louis.

Howdy -
Since you will bike for pie - may I suggest the very best pie in the US of A?
It is to be had at the cafe in Gibbonsville, Idaho which is on the southern loop choice of the L&C by Adventure Cycling - and, actually, truer to the actual route of Lewis & Clark. Gibbonsville is a hamlet at the foot of Lost Trail Pass - the lady who runs the cafe also has a nice campground with cheap cyclist rates - - and the pies - - oh, mercy! I was heading up the pass one evening - planning to go further to camp in the national forest - but just though I'd do a quick stop to see if they had any pie. I truly expected some FoodServiceofAmerica concoction - but instead I got a whole piece of peach/raspberry - and bonus half slices of two others - pear/blueberry - and apple/chokecherry - all homemade and all scrumptious. Pies to die for.

Arrghh! I just went online to see if I could find the owner's name and I'm not sure whether it's for sale or not.

I've been through Gibbonsville, about 10 years ago, and zoomed right past trying to beat a snow storm. Should have smelled the pie! If they can beat the Norski Nook in Osseo, Wi then it will be a treat!

I may not stay true to the trail, especially when I get near Wyoming. Everything is loosely in the planning stages(and all plans qre always loose) at the moment, but I would like to be in Lander on the 3rd of July for Dr(dentist) fireworks and do barebecue with the blues-brothers up the street. You dont have far to go from home for good pie. One of the restuarants(name escapes me) in Dubuois has fantastic pie. Thought of moving back there.

A ex-girl friend and I camped on the mountain above Ten Sleep for a few nights, rock hounding and sleeping by day because we got too busy watching stars and meteors all night long and did same thing in Wind River range a few days later. Wyoming is not a good place to sleep, too much to do and only one lifetime!

Florida in June! Oh My My! Oh My!

I don't think I can top that bounty, but if you do follow the "official" L&C across Lolo Pass, stop in Kamiah, ID at Jilinda's on the right. I hope it's still there, as they have great huckleberry pie--good enough to write about in my journal anyway.

My favorite pie in the US is at Becky's, just west of Crater Lake OR in Union Creek. I manned a fire lookout in 1961 at Crater Lake when Becky herself presided, but the place is still humming, Beckyless, still turning out those great pies. It's famous enough that you can drop the name in a crowded room here in NY and have a chance of turning a head (though mentioning Wall Drug is a cinch, by comparison).

Howdy -

And then there's the olallaberry pie at the Davenport Cafe on the Pacific Coast Trail just north of Santa Cruz, Calif. I had to have two pieces last time I was thru.

As for biking this summer - I'm going to be heading north from Brown's Park, Colo in late June to Glacier in early to mid July as part of a longer tour - but looking at the L&C route we'll probably cross paths rather than have a section of parallel riding. It's been a long time since I've toured back east - just too populated.

One concern I might have about the L&C is that it loops around reservoir after reservoir - can't help but since Pick-Sloan damned the Missouri 50 years ago. Anyhoo - I talked a little about dams at crazyguyonabike - - there will be a lot of boat/trailer traffic - campgrounds with folks that enjoy things such as jet skis - hilly rather than level riding since the reservoir fills the natural valley - and few, often congested, often cycle unfriendly crossings of the river/reservoir.

It hasn't been a conscious decision - but I have avoided reservoirs in most of my touring. Just a comment - but Hwy 12 in northern Nebraska is real sweet - especially in Keyapaha County.
