Last summer my close friend turned vegan and started showing me all these vegan bs videos and one caught my eye. it was this cyclist named durianrider (his youtube name, not sure what his real name is) he traveled to thailand and ranted and raved about how great it was there for raw vegans (blah blah vegan garbage) anyway he also stated that many cyclists head out there for some training that the roads are great. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4hac6EdoKg heres the original video i saw, its rather lengthy 31 mins.

he basically says you can live out there for 5-10 bucks a day. 5 for food and 5 for a daily massage. you can rent a condo for 40~ a month or stay in a hotel for about 10 dollars a day. a plane ticket is around 1300-1900 depending on time of arrival and departure from LAX - Bangkok. me and a few cycling buddies want to make a trip out there this summer for about a month. around mid/late june - late july.

this site really got me excited, i saw those pics and my jaw dropped.

this was enough for me to realize that cycling in thailand would be fun, but what else would we do for a whole month?

that's when i came across this site, it says you can swim with dolphins for 15 bucks! also has a long list of natural attractions such as waterfalls and natural parks.

now after reading this long post you may ask wtf is the point? well i am here to ask if anyone has any experience in thailand and if anyone is interested in maybe tagging along, the more the merrier!

Firstly, be sure to get medical insurance, and carry it with you. Be careful of pot holes and damaged road surfaces, especially during rain storms, because the holes in the road fill with water and you cant see the bottom of the hole. Also be careful of the driving standards in Thailand, they arent the most cautious of drivers. Also, the heat can be unbearable, so its plenty of sun block and lots of water. Other than that it is a fantastic country, beautiful, and the Thai people are very nice. (the land of smiles). I bet you have a great time.

Thanks for all the new links I'll make sure to check them out as soon as I get access to a computer. As for transporting my bike does anyone have experience getting their bike to Thailand? Is it easier to ship or (like the video says) use the airline I fly with to haul it over.

I toured in northern Thailand and loved it. Friendly people, nice scenery, good roads, great food, and it's inexpensive. And if you go from December to February, the temperatures are comfortable in the north. The rest of the country is hot and sticky year-round. Northern Laos was great, too, but it's more rustic than Thailand.

yes, it's all true....except the $40/month condo. depending on location, you might
find a furnished condo for as little as a couple hundred for a month. that's if you
want to spend all your time in one location. check the ads on thaivisa for short
term rentals.

i lived in chiang mai for a year on a student visa. lots of time for touring in the
immediate area, and longer tours in laos and cambodia.

you can usually find guesthouses for $10 or less, food is inexpensive if you
avoid 'western' meals. us passport holders should qualify for the 30-day
visa exemption when flying in.

you have other transport options in country. easy to load your bike on the
buses and trains. cheap flights on air asia.

nice! ya i was thinking we would just cruise around take buses and our bikes as transport and stay where ever we can find a spot. one of my buddies wants to go but doesn't own a bike, should i tell him to buy before we go or to rent/buy when we are there?

I haven't toured/cycled in Thailand, but have been there many times. Temperatures in the South aren't that bad in the months you mention. We toured in Malaysia last year in December, and the temperatures (~ 30 Celsius) were bearable considering we had a flat route. Climbing is not advised though in that climate :shocked:

Laos is nice, but unfortunately, unlike in Thailand, medical facilities are virtually non-existent. Be prepared to be air-lifted to Thailand at the mere hint of a medical emergency.

I wish people would get over the sex thing with Thailand. It really is a wonderful place that has so many other things to offer travellers. The food, culture and general friendliness of the people are unrivalled. Couple that with decent public transportation and willingness to accomodate, and you have a winner at prices that are very hard to beat.
