88 Trek 850 for Touring?

I've been looking around for a frame to build up a medium tourer. I may not ever do full camping but don't want to exclude it. So I have looked at lighter options from Soma (ES and doublecross) and some other vendors. BUT, going over my stock of older bikes I realized my 88 Trek 850 might actually be a very good option (and free). I had built it up 9 yrs ago for #1 son who is now off making his fortune in the big city. It is available for re-purposing and fits me quite well (top tube maybe 1cm longer than perfect).

Anybody have pros or cons about this candidate (88 Trek 850) for a touring build?

Slack angles, long chainstays, lugged steel, free. Go for it. Get a shorter stem.

I have a Trek 900 of the same year. If your 850 is similar, I think it would make a wonderful tourer. Mine even has front fork rack braze-ons.
