Hey all,

Just wanted to follow up on the progress of my first tour.

So far, so good! We've had a few bumps in the road and some light injuries (my knees, and my friends arm), but other than that we've been pedaling our asses off and enjoying every minute of being out on the open road.

My friend and I started riding from Bremerton, WA on 5/5 and we're currently posted up in a motel here in Crescent City, CA today as it's pouring rain outside. Would you believe me if I told you today was the first time we've seen rain on this trip? Well, it's true. We couldn't believe it either! We rode through both Washington and Oregon without a single drop of rain.

We arrived here in Crescent City, CA yesterday after a short 30 miles from Harris Beach State Park in Oregon. We decided to take a rest day here in Crescent City before tackling some big hills tomorrow on our way into the Redwoods.

Do any of you guys have any recommendations for us when it comes to exploring the Redwoods? Anything we should look out for or prepare for before we head on out tomorrow morning?

Glad to hear you're still riding. Thought you might bail after all the knee problems. What have you done to fix that?

A while after climbing over the two hills south of Crescent City you'll come to the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway, which is beautiful. Turn right there (4 miles south of Klamath - can't miss it) and ride by several redwood groves for ten miles or so until it meets back up with 101. Also don't miss the Avenue of the Giants - a 31-mile alternate to 101 through redwood groves that begins about 6 miles south of Rio Dell.

Well, we've taken a couple of days off in between riding and during those days I've been doing a lot of stretching and simply just relaxing. I've been also taking ibuprofren 3x a day during our rides which is definitely helping. I'm riding with a flexible knee brace as well and it seems to be working pretty well when it comes to keeping everything in line when I pedal. Over the course of the last week or so it's been feeling a lot better. Not nearly as much pain as when we crossed Rt 30 to Astoria.

Didn't bike through there yet, but have camped and hiked in the Humboldt Redwoods area. You must ride down the Avenue of the Giants. It is an experience unlike any other. There is something about those giant trees that is simply unforgettable. The road is narrow though, so you do have to keep an eye out for the motor-tourists, but it's a very charming place all the same.

Ry/Pause, if you are following either the Bicycling the Pacific Coast book route, or Adventure Cycling's Pacific Coast Route, both will route you off of 101 and onto Drury Parkway and Avenue of the Giants. So they make it easy.

When in Eureka, if you like beer, stop by Lost Coast Brewery.
