Ontario to the US via Detroit area??
Will be trvelling around Lake Erie and had planned to cross at Pelee Island. But disrupted ferry service may require a change of plans.
What is the best way to cross over? I know that the tunnel is not a viable option. I have heard about crossing further north?
Your help would be great! We are heading out on Thursday from the Cleveland area toward Buffalo.

I've never crossed at Detroit on a bike, but to my knowledge you have either the tunnel or the Ambassador bridge. Google Maps shows the Blue Water Bridge north of Lake St. Clair between Sarnia and Port Huron; maybe that could be a possibility?
Make sure you have adequate personal ID to cross into Canada and back into the States.

Maybe the bridge authority will take you across. They will do that at the Macinaw bridge.

You gonna eat that?
Yeah, there's the tunnel and Ambassador Bridge in Windsor, and the Bluewater in Sarnia. It's been too long since I've lived up there, so I can't recommend one over the other.

I don't believe there is anyway to cross at Detroit/Windsor without a ride. There is the Bluewater Ferry service which is a bit north of Detroit in Marine City https://bluewaterferry.com/.

According to this mornings voice message at ontarioferries.com all ferries are now running on normal schedule. Just to double check, here's their telephone: 1.800.661.2220
I'm leaving from Cleveland on the same route in reverse direction tomorrow, so hoping this is correct.
My alternative plan is to ferry from Catawba over to South Bass, talk up a boating tourist at Frosty Bar and hopefully hitch a ride over to Pelee. Could also hit up a charter captain after their morning run, some would love an extra payday, it's only 10 miles between islands. Failing that, spend the Memorial Day weekend at Put-in-Bay, a fine Hunter S. Thompson level event.
Cheers, hope to see you out there.
