The propagation doesn't seem to have reached this part of Australia yet Neil. Probably slowed down by the reverse hemispheric polarity affect which so often gives us angst and causes water to spiral down our plug holes in the reverse direction :)

Still not reaching the site... Wonder what "the big guys" do when they need a DNS change propagated? Microsoft or Apple or one of the big retailers wouldn't just wait...

Oddly enough in Ottawa yesterday it came through (saturday 10th) but still today in Montreal the 11th it is still out... is that resetting dns thing worth figuring out how to do (doesnt mean a thing to me)? Ps, when I say "out" I mean it still goes to the page explaining why the site is down. |
Still out as of 1:30pm CST on Sunday, 11/11, in this backwater known as Chicago, IL. Does the browser (Safari 5.0.6) or ISP (AT&T) have any affect?
|
It has just come through here. Canberra Australia. Monday morning Australian Eastern Time.
I am using Safari. On an iPad. regards Graham |
9:10pm CST. The signal has reached Chicago. Yea!
|
Well, I've been intrigued by the problem and have tried a number of things - none have worked.
To see the propagation around the world go to http://www.viewdns.info/propagation/ and put in "crazyguyonabike.com". Looked like it has reached everywhere but Japan when I checked. An interesting web site to know about, in any event. Then I thought maybe I had the wrong info stored on my computer somehow. Deleted all browsing histories, etc. No luck. Found the command " ipconfig/flushdns" which should flush out any dns info stored on the computer. No luck. I also changed to google DNS settings Neil suggested. No luck. Any other ideas?? (And for the "geographic theorists", I'm in California - the info should have slid down the map from Oregon really quickly!) Guess I just need to be patient. |

must be because of our communist governments. |
No problem in Southern California. I wonder if it has more to do with your ISP?
|
Just tried the site one last time tonight... and there it was! Patience seems to be the answer.

I still get a "security warning" advising me not to go to the site... as do most of the people to whom I've sent the link to my most recent trip. Sure wish that would go away!!
(tried to edit my last post to add this, but it wouldn't "take"... |
Like a yogurt commercial, Cgoab is now freshly active in Montreal, I wonder if it will rise now?
|
Late afternoon Monday Canberra Australia and CGOAB seems to be down again. Was OK this morning, but not now.

In the meantime, if you want to get proactive about it, then the workaround is to change your computer's internet settings to use different DNS servers, e.g. Google runs some at 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 which seem good, they are the ones I use and the address for the server updated quite quickly there (I think it was 12 hours). The procedure for changing DNS servers depends on your platform, but a bit of judicious googling should lead you to tutorials that can take you through it step by step - e.g. search for something like "how to change dns server" and google suggests a bunch of platforms in the dropdown menu. Add your platform to the end of the search, e.g. "how to change dns server windows 7" and you'll find very specific instructions on how to do that. Learning how to change dns servers is a useful computer skill to have, since sometimes an ISP's default dns can be rather slow - and slow lookups can make your entire internet experience seem sluggish. Also, if your default DNS server has some issue or is otherwise unavailable, it can be useful to know how to switch to a different one. OpenDNS is another good option (just google it). Hope that helps, Neil |
good news! :)
crazyguy is now visible from china! bad news! :( crazyguy is blocked by the great firewall. vpn/circumventer required to access |
Strange things happening
Wow.
After the site was back up a day or two ago I was able to access it without problems a few times, then it started redirecting to http://5.9.19.51/ again, so I kind of gave up. Then today it was still not working, so I checked here on bikeforums to see if there were any news, saw all the talk about changing DNS settings, googled that, didn't feel confident enough to undertake anything (I suspect it might cause me additional problems as I'm using a USB internet dongle thing from a German company with an Italian SIM card, sometimes on a eeePC with Ubuntu, sometimes on another eeePC with Windows 7), and then (this is the really strange thing) I go off that help page and try again, and it worked! Unfortunately, after just a couple of pages of successful viewing within CGOAB, it started showing the 5.9.19.51 page again! Weird! Wouldn't you say? Help! Ignacio |
P.S.:
Neil, maybe you can put a redirect order (or whatever) to have http://5.9.19.51/ point to crazyguyonabike.com? I suspect my ignorance and the resulting suggestion is probably making more than one out there laugh. So be it. Anyway, I hope the kobolds of the internet decide to do their thing for me soon! That is, either getting out of the way or coming to fix whatever it is that's hindering things. Oh, by the way, I checked on the http://www.viewdns.info/propagation/ and got the following (all of them with a green checkmark except Toronto and Tokyo with red crosses): DNS propagation results for crazyguyonabike.com ============== Expected value (discovered direct from the root servers): 69.59.196.178 Location Lookup Result Status Bangkok, Thailand 69.59.196.178 Auckland, New Zealand 69.59.196.178 Gent, Belgium timeout Toronto, Canada 208.64.24.170 Paris, France 69.59.196.178 Echterdingen, Germany 69.59.196.178 Arizona, United States 69.59.196.178 New York, United States 69.59.196.178 Oklahoma, United States 69.59.196.178 San Francisco, United States 69.59.196.178 Washington DC, United States 69.59.196.178 Melbourne, Australia 69.59.196.178 Sydney, Australia 69.59.196.178 Beijing, China 69.59.196.178 Tokyo, Japan 208.64.24.170 Monterrey, Mexico 69.59.196.178 Johannesburg, South Africa 69.59.196.178 Moscow, Russia 69.59.196.178 Manchester, United Kingdom 69.59.196.178 |

FWIW, it was working yesterday but, this morning, no access from here in New York.
I get "Error 102 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED): The server refused the connection." And http://5.9.19.51/ gives me the "down for maintenance page". |

I'm still connecting to the old address for http://www.crazyguyonabike.com of 208.64.24.170 (the old server address)
I know the new address is 69.59.196.178 so as a web developer I was able to instruct my computer to use the new address when I type http://www.crazyguyonabike.com it now goes to the website. If you still cannot see the site (you have not received the new updated address yet) and you want to do it yourself go to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc and copy a file called hosts to your desktop. Also copy it somewhere else as a backup. You'll see something like this # Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp. # # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows. # # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name. # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one # space. # # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol. # # For example: # # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host 127.0.0.1 localhost ::1 localhost where you see 127.0.0.1 localhost add the following line before it 69.59.196.178 http://www.crazyguyonabike.com it should now look like # Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp. # # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows. # # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each # entry should be kept on an individual line. Unfortunately from a legal viewpoint I have to give the disclaimer that you do this at your own risk and I cannot be held responsible for any actions from anyone following the above advice. If in doubt seek professional advice. Also note this change is permament so if the site changes location again you will need to update your hosts file accordingly. |
Sorry, the server went down AGAIN last night, amazingly due to a completely unrelated software glitch. Rather than explain it all again here, I'll post a link to the thread I just made on crazyguyonabike:
http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/forum...read_id=421160 Once again, apologies - it's quite weird that all this would be happening just during my house move. Grrr. Neil |
