Question about Marfa, Ft. Davis, and Alpine, Texas.

In planning a tour in and around Big Bend, Texas, I have come upon a problem that forces me to decide if I want to take an extra day to ride to Ft. Davis, Texas.

The problem involves my bike box, which my S&S coupled bike fits into. On tours where I start in place A and finish in place B (start in Alpine, finish in Presidio), I usually UPS my bike box to my destination. However, due to timing and UPS availability, I don't think it is feasible to do this from Alpine in a timely fashion.

As a result, I am thinking of changing my start/end point to be Marfa, Texas. The bus from Midland goes there, as well, and it is a day's ride from Presidio to complete the loop.

By starting in Marfa, which seems like a better town to spend time in, I have a bit of a dilemma. I can ride to Ft. Davis and then to Alpine in a day and then down to Big Bend via Marathon, which seems like a natural schedule. But, this means I don't ride between Marfa and Alpine, which I've heard is a nice ride.

I could ride out and back to Ft. Davis and then ride from Marfa to Marathon, but this would add 1 extra day to the trip, which isn't a bad thing but is only necessary if it is worth the effort to see both Ft. Davis and the road from Marfa to Alpine.

Does anyone who has done these rides and/or been to these places have any ideas on the best routing plan?

I had a better idea.

I think I'll stay with the original starting place of Alpine and turn the ride into a loop by riding from Presidio to Marfa instead of taking the bus and then riding from Marfa to Alpine as the last ride of the tour. It will take an extra day but I have the time.
