    Building my first touring bike! =D

    Hey guys, I'm new to this forum and thought I'd try to get some insight and feedback on a build I just threw myself into. I've been riding a fixed gear aluminum frame bike for three years now, but I keep wanting to ride just farther and farther and farther. The problems however are: anything I want to bring with me has to be in a backpack (and that's no fun), a track geometry frame hurts like hell after 30 miles and fixed gear - as ironic as this statement is - just isn't all that practical.

    And now after gawking over touring bikes all winter I've just bought myself a Pake C'Mute frame and a Surly Longhaul Trucker fork for under $250 total!

    I'm going to go with a moutain bike rear end and a road bike front, so this will surly be an interesting build. I can't wait to start gathering parts and get this show on the road! I was even able to sell my track bike right away to help with funds but that means I'm condemned to my back-up folding bike till I get this done. I always think its good to engineer motivation into these projects. hah

    Slussman, I've built quite a few road bikes, but I used this forum extensively for guidance a couple of years ago with my first touring bike build. Most anything goes, but gearing in the 20-100 GI range seems to be a constant as are tires, generally 28-32 mm as a minimum.

    A tourer can be built on a tight budget, mine was as I wasn't sure about having one, and still be reliable enough for anything without requiring upgrades. Items to not skimp on are fitment and comfort as a touring bike, at least in name suggests many hours day after day in the saddle.

    Lastly is don't be surprised when the first time you lift the completed bike it's much heavier than expected.

    What's this GI range?

    I chose a crankset with a 48/38/28t range and the rear will be a 9 speed cassette 11-32t. I figured I'd want to have the option to have fairly high and low gearing, and ironically 3x9 was more affordable than any 2x9 option I could find! And I actually did order some 32mm tires today, another reason I thought it would be appropriate to have the option of low gearing. I'm not too worried about the high end of my gear ratio - my fixed was around 42t x 16t and I can't imagine taking this bike anywhere near as fast as I would take that thing.

    And yeah, this thing will be heavy as hell. But I miss that. I used to ride an old commuter bike my mom had when we lived in Germany, and that thing was HEAVY, but tons of fun. I have to admit, I'm getting some real nostalgia doing this build since the Pake frame is a lot like that old bike was.

    ^haha I wasn't sure if anyone would catch that!

    The front wheel I had built for my old bike and is a SRAM generator hub with some heavy gauge spokes. The rear wheel is just an off the shelf Shimano 105 hub'd road cassette that I'm throwing a SRAM mountain bike cassette on - its new off ebay and the seller assured me it was a tough wheel so I'll just see if we was right.

    I plan on getting most of it built in a couple weeks during my spring break and hopefully I'll have enough time to ride to Milwaukee and back before school starts again, but I assume I'll naturally run into some problems that will probably put me off schedule.

    I'll definitely post some pics once its done, and maybe some during the build!
