A very sad and unhappy incident in India
Here is a very sad and unhappy attack on two cyclists in India. I wonder if their consulate would have given them any advice prior to the trip. This type of event could happen to anybody anywhere, but as the article points out, rapes of this type have become more prevalent in Northern India.

Sad.
We spent much of 2011 in India. Some of it on a motorcycle. Hands down it is the most difficult place we've traveled. I don't think it would have been half as difficult had I been alone. Since I was with my wife I got to see first-hand (well, second-hand) through her eyes how women are treated. It is probably India's greatest challenge.
After returning home from big trips people often quote the cliché, "One thing I learned while traveling is that everyone wants the same things in life." Hogwash! People are incredibly, unbelievably, horribly, wonderfully.... different. That is the beauty of the world.
India has a male/female ratio that is almost unfathomable. And growing worse. This is a relatively recent problem as the technology was not affordable until the early 1990s. Do the math. This problem will only get worse.
Despite that, we'll be going back on our next trip and we'll be taking the bikes. Being in places that are different from what we know, from where we are comfortable, from how we were brought up.... it makes us adapt and grow. We probably will not be camping, though we considered it and I am in no way criticizing the Swiss couple's decision to do so.
