Bike Box feedback
Hi, Unfortunately I have this job that gets in the way of my fun. As a result I'm working on the Trans Am in segments. My last segment the return trip was easy. I rented a car home and started from home here on the east coast. My next segment is 800 miles further away from home and renting is out of the question. After careful research on all modes of transportation, costs, arrival and departure locations and travel time, I've concluded that the best bet for me is to go Greyhound. I plan to use it to get to my next starting point and the return trip 2 weeks later. Another advantage is the bike will be under the bus and I personally handle it myself. Thing is I will have to box the bike. Air Caddy is nice but pricey. E box requires more take down of the bike but its cheaper. Once at the starting point I want to get going and not spend time tweaking the bike. Then on the way back I would have to get another box. Anybody got any great ideas on this bike box issue? Make my own? Guess a bike shop would help at the return end. Thanks for your assistance in advance. Sport

We often get our bicycle boxes from bike shops ... and most of the time they have been free. A tip if you're thinking of going this route ... plan an extra day or two to find a box and get everything sorted.

I've crossed the US twice in stages similar to yours, using all forms of transport. More than once, I rented a car at the destination for a bit of area exploration and for acquiring a box and getting it and bike to the bus or train station. A taxi works for this too.

We get boxes from our local bike shop to travel to our destination at no charge, they are throwing them out anyway. On our return journey we bag our bikes, little more risk here but lot's of cardboard helps, we take our derailleurs off so they don't get damaged. Ours are the tardis bag from Ground Effect but imagine there are quite a few others around. We carry the bags with us so no hanging around or having to organise anything bar some tape and cardboard which is usually not difficult to find. We have done this quite a few times, once my bike was damaged but it was on the homeward bound sector and it was able to be fixed when we got back. Hope that helps.
