Front Derailleur
I want to change my front crankset to one that has a 46 36 26 chainrings. I think I would eventually change the granny gear to 24 and possibly the large ring to 48. I am wondering what front derailleur will work with this range. I have done some research and know the Shimano XTR would work but it could cost more then the crankset. Would my Sora triple work??

Harris Cyclery sells a Shimano RSX front derailleur that they say is the only one Shimano made that works with compact cranks and SIS shifters. It's about 30 bucks. I just put one on my bike and I think it is gonna work fine.

I have used a 105 triple front derailer with a Sugino crankset with 46-36-26 rings. For reference, I was also using a Shimano barend shifter (friction, not indexed), and the combination worked fine.

Your right. I've done some more looking and found a couple of online bike shops that have a plan Deore that will take between 46 and 48 teeth on the large cog. It depends on the model. I just never realized that the front derailleur can be so tricky.

Why not try the one that you already have? If it works okay, then you save money. If you are using road STI brifters, then you might be stuck with it anyway.

As I continue look around for information I found that Rivendell uses their 105 triple front on mountain cranks. https://www.rivbike.com/webalog/shif...eurs/17082.html
They say it should be adjusted to just clear the chainstay when it is in the granny gear. Why do I have a hard time picturing this? Your right ScituateJohn, I will try my Sora before anything else.
