While journalists should rightly weigh every single word for its value, they cannot invariably expect that care to come across to their audiences. Because of the latter effect, many journalists get sloppy or arrogant. They think unreliable reading provides an excuse for unreliable or over-simplified writing.

You need to keep an eye on the spam folder. Legit posters who just happen to cite a business or business-like url can end up there. Every now and again, a good comment can get lost that way.

I do it the exact same way. Don't forget that many people don't wish to use social networks and don't have an OpenID either.

Found a more subtle approach in my WP spam folder this morning: "I found your site on Twitter. I wouldn't normally visit sites like yours, but your opinions stand out."

... except that I don't normally post many opinions. ;-) But I was curious enough to check out the comment's backlink.

A quick update: I posted the 200th article on Trails and Tours this morning. In all, there are links to about 650 external resources. I hope to fill the more blatant of the remaining topical gaps by March to ensure a fairly comprehensive site by the time the (northern hemisphere) season gets going.
