Hello,
I have toured by bike all around Japan for 10 years.
And I have started web site about touring in Japan, "WADACHI - Enjoy cycling and drinking around Japan! - (https://www.geocities.jp/wadachi294/)) " (It has tips and trouvelogues).
I want to present really usefull (but sometimes useless
) tips in the site.
What is your most usefull tips, when you go touring to unknown place or country?
If you give me some advice, it is my great pleasure.
I am not so good at English, so please forgive my impolite English.

Thanks, Sora, for a very nice web site. Makes me want to tour in Japan! The tip I really need is how to convince my boss that I need some time off to take a nice, long bicycle tour.

I want to tour Japan too! I absolutely adore Japanese culture, and I've wanted to bicycle tour there for many years, but the written language is intimidating to me. At least in Russia I could read Cyrillic road signs. At any rate, I have been moving steadily westward all my life, so perhaps I'll go so far west that I end up in the Far East someday.
As for tips, I doubt there is much I could tell you that you don't already know. And a lot of my tips are really exclusive to my area. I'll have to think about it... I think the one thing that I've converted a lot of cyclists to is the comfortable Thermarest chair, which makes dual use of a Thermarest sleep pad, but I'm pretty sure most people know about these by now: https://www.nevisport.com/storedetail...duct_id-461258
I like this thing so much that I even sit in it at home when I read, hehe.

Welcome again, my fellow paisano from Yokohama. The tip I really seek the most is acquiring all the free time needed to do some serious touring. I'm at times overwhelmed at running my business and keeping up with all my financial obligations, let alone find time even for a short mini-tour. I really need to work on acquiring some quality free time and a clear state of mind.

You know good thing, I never know. But I am not rich, so I use newspaper or garbage bag to avoid coldness in the touring or tenting. Japanese garbage bag really good, please try one!

Japan is one place we'd love to tour and it's quite accessible from NZ. However, can you tell me what the law is regarding tandems? I remember reading on another sitew that they were illegal - is this correct?

I pretty much doubt you'll encounter any problems while touring, especially with two 'gaijins' on a tandem...

Tandems Illegal!?!
It looks like in some of those narrow streets you couldn't even turn a tandem around!
My father used to go to Japan on business trips in the '70s and he said the car we had at the time (a Plymouth Fury) couldn't fit down some of those streets.

nice site sora, am thinking about doing japan next year. i don´t like flying so really want to go with ferries, some informations on transport (schedules, prices, etc) would be nice, like from taiwan to japan (i think there´re some that goes from kaohsiung or keelung to okinawa, but am not sure) and domestic routes.
so one can not sit on the rear rack either?
