My rough plan is a loop from Rapid City. To Spearfish then through Spearfish Canyon to pick up the Mickelson Trail south of Lead to the end in Edgemont. South from there into NE, possibly stopping at the primative campground at the Toadstool site if the dirt road is rideable, then to Ft. Robinson S.P. before heading east toward Chadron an then turning north back into SD to Hot Spring and then maybe Custer via SR 87 and U.S. 16A.

My touring partner and I were all set to start the Sierra Cascades route on September 2nd, and then the forest fires started. We switched last week to pedal again down the Pacific Coast. This will be my fourth trip from here, Aberdeen WA to S.F., but it is such fun. Hilly, but fun.

I'm getting ready to do a week+long swing through central New York State with another member of this forum. Finger Lakes, "Leatherstocking Region", possibly as far north as the Adirondacks. Camping in State Parks, a few Warmshowers hosts, taking it easy, not covering any awesome miles.

Just did the length of South Korea. When I return to New Zealand in December I plan on touring round the North Island (no real goals, just want to reconnect after 12 years away) for 2-3 weeks. Not worried overly about destination other than I want to ride down 90 mile beach and pick up a few spots a went as a kid.

Leaving for my second "long" bike tour on Sept. 27, riding Cycle NC from the mountains to the coast. I have ridden several days of CNC on a number of occasions, as well as their spring weekend ride, but never the whole week-long fall tour. The route this year is very nice from Sparta, NC, east just below the Virginia state line to Edenton, and then south to Manteo and Cape Hatteras on the Outer Banks. The entire ride should easily top 400 miles, averaging 60+ miles a day. This is a supported tour, so the organizers carry your gear from town to town along the route. I plan to camp most of the way.

North Carolina Amateur Sports

Originally, I had planned to ride a loaded-tour loop through Coastal NC and the Outer Banks. However, when I saw that the CNC ride this year was ending at the Outer Banks, I decided to do that instead. In addition, several of my friends are riding CNC, but I was having trouble recruiting riding mates for the loaded tour.

In June, I rode the GAP-C&O Canal trail from Pittsburgh to Washington DC with friends. This has been a very wet and rainy summer in the Mid-Atlantic states, so we were very lucky that it was so dry. I highly recommend this trip for cyclists looking for a week-long tour that is largely free of traffic. We stayed in hotels and inns along the way, and carried our gear in panniers, but campsites are available along the entire route. Total riding was about 400 miles including our side trips to towns.

We started in DC, parking our car at relative's house and riding our loaded bikes to the Amtrak station downtown. We took the train to Pittsburgh, unpacked and reassembled our bikes, and rode to our hotel in the middle of the night. We toured downtown Pittsburgh on our first day and then headed down the GAP trail, averaging about 60 miles/day. It was just a great trip and we are already talking about doing it again some time.

2014 touring plans - Hope to make another trip in the Everglades National Park -- from the park entrance to Flamingo which is the end of Florida on Florida Bay. It's roughly 40 miles. I've done the ride previously with my daughter and a second time with my niece. This trip will be with another niece and whoever else wants to make the ride. We have to wait until the weather turns cooler otherwise the mosquitoes will pick us up and carry us away... It's a fabulous ride --- unlike anywhere else on the planet

Sorry I couldn't answer your post while we were pedaling, but I couldn't figure out how on my cell phone. I'm back home after 900 miles in 17 days of pedaling. It was great fun, and I thought I pedaled the hills better than any year. I posted some pictures on my Click-Stand Facebook page.

NE Ohio to home. 9 Days, about 500 miles, about 27,000’ ofclimbing. It rained half of the 1[SUP]st[/SUP] day and nearly all of the 60+mile 8[SUP]th[/SUP] day. Longest day was about 75 miles. Shortest day was about45 miles. One flat tire at the end of Day 1. I had to walk party of two hillson Day 8. The ruling grades were in the mid to upper teens.

Stops in Franklin, a few miles west of Clarion, Woodland (eastof Clearfield), a few miles north of Bellefonte, Raymond B. Winter State Park(about 20 miles west of Lewisburg), Bloomsburg, Hegins (home of the infamouspigeon shoot) and Red Run Campground in Lancaster County.

Camped every night. Cooked dinner every night except one. Didn’tuse a computer or otherwise go on line. Sat in a chair with a back only threetimes during the trip. Didn’t spend more than 25 min. or so in a structure withfour walls and a roof. Ran into one BF member in Falls Creek.

Favorite animal sightings were a bald eagle couple squabblingabout 20’ above my head in camp in Franklin and a pet pot belly pig outside ofDanville.

We are interested in riding some of the cycling routes in South Korea ... did you follow those routes or do your own thing?

We did mostly the four rivers, but branched off for a faster route home in the last 100km. I've cycled the Han river hundreds of times so there was really no need to do it again. Just bring a Garmin with the OSM garmin basemap and you can't get lost. The four rivers path is the easiest to follow. Its 600 odd km from the west coast in Incheon down to Busan. We did it in reverse. I would choose the Busan to Sokcho route along the east coast though. If you do the four rivers be aware that coming into and out of Busan there are few opportunities to get supplies so stock up!

Rather than Amtrak from Portland to Eugene, have you considered riding to Eugene via the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway - Ride Oregon Ride ? I haven't ridden it yet but it looks like a great ride.

Yes, I looked into that bikeway route. I postponed my Oregon trip until 2015, but when I do it, I'm considering the Willamette Valley route if I can get at least 1 other person to join me. I'll post the ride in the Meetup.com group for northern California bicycle touring and camping. I checked where we can stay overnight along the route. There are parks which allow overnight tent camping, but one leg of about 120 miles would require one night in a motel.

Is it too early to start talking about 2015?

I'm thinking of doing a 5-day tour to Lake Temiskaming and back (the route ends at my sister-in-law's place where I plan to meet my wife but I could simply add another day and ride home).

Yes, one year I drove west from NH with a mountain biking buddy for some spring riding in SW CO and SE UT. He had to stop en route at Sioux City, Iowa for a business conference so from there I cycled on west through northern NE. I finished at Valentine where he picked me up to continue the car trip west. As I recall, I followed NE 12 until I turned off onto the dirt near Meadville and followed those through the Niobrara Preserve most of the way to Valentine. Zoom in on the park service map at the above link and you'll see them. I was riding a mt bike but it would would have been doable on a well tired touring rig.

Another year I did a long solo tour from Regina SK to Las Vegas NM. That route took me from Badlands NP SD, across the Pine Ridge Reservation and into NE at either Gordon or Merriman, I don't remember which. From there west through Chadron into WY as mentioned above. I really enjoyed the northern tier of NE on both trips.
