2015 Worlds - Can I get there from here?
So I mention to my buddy that we should make an effort to attend the 2015 Road World Championships in Richmond, Va. Without even thinking, he says "it'd be cool to ride our bikes to it".
Which got me thinking; RI to Richmond, VA...how plausible would it be? My main concern is not the distance, but the logistics of finding a suitable route.
In my simple mind, we'd travel very light. I envision staying at hotels and dining out, so that should cut down on what we'd need to carry. On top of that, we might rope our wives into this fiasco, so they might be able to provide some support along the way.
Having never undertaken a tour, maybe it's just a pipe dream. On the bright side, I've got plenty of time to plan.

Wow. You'd have to ride thru the most congested places in the US to get there by the shortest routing. Not fun. Best to plot a route on rural roads far from NYC, Philly, and Washington. Be an interesting mapping challenge. Collect the maps and start plotting. Planning is half the fun.
You're suggesting what we call a credit card tour. No camping/cooking. You could carry the needed items on a seat post rack.

Check out the ACA (Adventure Cycling Association) Atlantic Coast Route. I think it goes through northwestern RI and plots a route south to Richmond, VA (and beyond).

I like what you did there! "2015 Worlds - Can I get there from here?" I thought you were wondering if you could train hard enough between now and then to qualify!
Anyway, depending where you are in Rhode Island, you'd have a pretty easy time getting through eastern CT to the New London Ferry via Rt. 1, 1A, some bike paths, etc. Take the ferry to Greenport, Long Island and you can definitely pedal your way west to Manhattan, where ferries and subways will take you to New Jersey with your bikes. From that point forward, you need to consult some of our "southern" members.

You may want to look at The East Coast Greenway. I've incorporated parts of it into some of my tours. It is a mixed bag and disjointed in sections but by 2015 who knows. Anyhow its good for ideas.

Thanks guys. I was familiar with the ACA, but the the Greenway was out of the blue. I should have thought of that.
I'll probably end up picking up some of the ACA maps and cross reference with the Greenway maps. I'll keep everyone posted.
I hope my buddy sticks with his idea...
