Bob QR Failure

Last summer, I went on a 1500 mile with a Bob Yak. I think I didn't tighten the QR enough, and I had a load near max, but the QR and the wheel slid off of the frame. Fortunately, I was just picking the bike up after it fell over (with the load still in the trailer), but ever after that I used a ton of force to close the QR, too much maybe. When I shipped the bike back, I removed the QR. Then I reattached it at home. Then I did another tour, only a couple hundred miles, and repeated the shipping and return process. Finally, I left for a tour two weeks ago. Upon arrival, I was putting together my bike and I heard a "snap" when I tightened the QR. ****. It would close, but slowly reopen. Fine, this tour is only about 400 miles so it will just have to hold for a bit and I tightened it down manually by screwing it down. It broke completely. So I had it welded and manually tightened it. I crashed when it broke again, but I was OK. At that point, I was able to meet up with a friend who had an extra QR and I used that one. What gives? Did I just tighten it down too much? Is it not meant to be removed and placed back on multiple times? I guess the lesson is to always carry a back up QR. I feel like this is a major weakness of the Yak system.

Yes I agree, a good reason to bring a Spare skewer .. they went with a profitable source for the skewer,
which as with many things was based on lowest cost .

the re-machined ends for those thimble things for the trailer tow fork
means they are the sole source for another skewer..

did you ask at the company as well, on their customer service web address? ,

they may offer a 2 for one on getting a couple new skewers. to then have a backup ..

Which wheel fell off? The B.O.B. wheel or the bike wheel?

Assuming the latter...My GF has used a Yak numerous times. The skewer used to secure the trailer to the bike has been taken off and put back on multiple times on three different bikes without incident.

Sounds like your bike has track/horizontal slots that open rearward. If that is the case the entire trailer load is working against the QR, which is going to fail. I wouldn't pull a trailer with that type of arrangement. You could try replacing the QR with a long bolt that you could really crank down, but I think you'll still have an issue.

If the wheel actuially did slide out of the slots, as I read in the first post, it sounds that way to me too. I agree with VT Speed- probably not a set up all around. Although it would require some cash outlay, maybe a nutted axle hub with Bobnutz would be better suited for that bike? Whatever the details, I`d contact the manufacturer for advise and possibly a break on the skewer replacement cost.

Just to update everyone. I contacted Bob, they sent me a new QR for free. The bike has slots that open downward, I believe the time when it slid off when I was touring over the summer was when I was picking the bike up from being on its side and stressing the QR downward.
