Single walled MTB rim on front

I rebuilt my rear wheel on my Trek 930 to a double walled Rhynolite rim with a decent LX hub and put a Continental Tour tire on it, so at least that's all set, but I'm wondering how really critical would it be for the front to be double walled.

I've never busted spokes on the front, just the rear. I'm just running a basic Araya wheel for now, but would love to build up another Rhynolite if I could ever scrounge the cash.

I don't overweight the front end too much and the bike is pretty solid.

How many of you guys use a "single wall" on the front? I'm generally good about not hitting deep potholes at 35 MPH , etc....

Thanks

If you have it and are not going anywhere too remote I say you should be fine to use it until it gives you problems, just check it occasionally but you should be doing that with any quality of rim. If you plan on spending a lot of time offroad I would say it is worth it to replace it, even if just lacing it to your old front hub, rims are cheap and spokes do not have to be expensive either so if you are doing the build yourself you do not have a ton of money into your wheel. You already seem to have your doubts so the piece of mind alone would be worth it for most.

For what it is worth, the rim quality does not change your chances of breaking a spoke, that comes down to proper tension, the wheel being properly stress relieved and spoke quality.

Well except that without proper quality tension can't be achieved.

If that single wall is thick enough .. inner wall has a hole in it anyhow

drop center single wall box corner Wolber Super champ 58 were very nice rims for puncture mending

Mavic A40 were a PIA because of the die shape .. tire removal ... with out the drop center profile.
