randonnuer bar question ( miyata 610)
Hello , I have a miyata 610 I am thinking of doing a few upgrades to and then maybe some touring .
The randonnuer bars are most comfortable width wise in the drops , but on the hoods they seem narrow.
When I first got the bike it appeared to be set up for drop riding ,but since I ride more in the drops the bars went down .
Wider in the drops than my normal bars just narrow up top . What gives? Why are these bars desirable for touring ?. Thank you

I liked mine, But yes the flare as it drops is putting the bottom wider than the top ,,
and the ramp is rather long so unsuitable for the also long hoods of brake-shifter combination levers
so I used a cable out the top brake and Bar end shifters ..
( being able to do it I had 2 narrower ones Cut at the opposite end of the center sleeve ,
so the tops combined were 42 wide the bottom is a 50 something ..
the stem I got fabricated had 2 sets of clamps 4" apart where the old centers of each bar section, were.
I think Nitto has some 46 wide (at the bottom) the mid 80s specialized expedition bike
came with Nitto made for specialized, bars .
In the drops there is wrist clearance , and the long ramp has been a comfortable top hand resting position ..
I do a thick tops padding scheme..

I have rando bars on my Soma Saga and I find them very comfortable. Since the drops flair out the angle of the brake hoods makes for comfortable hand position for long days.

I thought about going with rando bars to get that extra width, but like you I wanted it on the tops too. I went with Nitto Nodles, which come in 46cm and 48cm widths. I went with the 48's and have been extremely happy. I also double wrapped them, which has been very comfortable and nicer for big hands.

I have become very partial to my on one midge bars. They are shallow with slight flare. They are really comfortable for longer distances. I think I bought them at Planet X. If you google on one midge bars you can find them. Only one company in Seattle imports them from the UK. I got mine on sale for 29.95 with free shipping.
