Canada Via Train charge for bicycles?

The Canada Via Train mentions a $25 charge for bicycles. But it also mentions that some trains have bike racks and others require the bike be boxed. Ar you still charged the $25 fee for trains with racks? If so seems awfully expensive for taking the train a fairly short distance.

If you get this clarified, would you post your findings? We have also been trying to figure their system.

The info I got from Trip Advisor is they indeed charge the $25 even for RORO service .

The reason I was asking the question is that I am considering visiting the Boldt Castle on my tour around Lake Ontario. My touring buddy can't add a day . If we tour the castle we are going to need an extra day but Prince Edward Island looks like an interesting place to tour too.

I am thinking of maybe risking it and making up our day at the end of the tour. Make up our day by taking the Go train from Oshawa. The Go train seems to be less hassle and I imagine I would want to bypass Toronto anyway (but I could be wrong on that).

Here's the VIA rail site ... VIA Rail Canada: Train travel in Canada
And this is the bicycle page on the VIA rail site ... The Bike Train | VIA Rail

VIA rail is not like European trains or Amtrak ... it's less of a transportation train and more of a holiday train.

$25 per direction, even for a short trip sounds about right given that the fares on VIA rail are quite expensive.
