Difference between LX and DX for Trek 520

I heard people switching the crankset on the Trek 520 for a 44/32/22 instead of the 52/42/30. In most

cases, people switched it for a LX 44/32/22, but also heard people switching for the DX 44/32/22.

What is the difference between the LX 44/32/22 and the DX 44/32/22 ?

I haven't of DX. But I could be out of the loop on Shimano fashion trends. Did you mean XT? If so then the XT would be lighter and more expensive. I doubt it would have any performance gains other than the lighter weight. You will certainly have to change the stock setup though if you plan to do loaded touring. I still don't understand why Trek refuses to spec this bike for it's intended purpose.
