If you're traveling alone, you may not want to leave your "stuff" while you're 50 yards away, nor would it be the smart thing to do in a lot of places, in these times with security personel with automatic weapons. Especially not at an airport, or at a big train hub station.

But I can talk, I have a single duffle and a small bag (4L - really a toiletry kit) I use for my personal stuff - I can either attach a strap and carry it vertically on my shoulder (since I have sewed in some loops for this purpose and to strap it in front of the handlebars) or put it into the duffle. And, as the duffle comes with backpack straps, I can carry it as such. Not easy with all the weight (water is heavy!) but good enough for 50 yards.

Seriously, who needs panniers when touring?

a person carrying a duffle is an easy target. easy to knock down and take away all their precious items too. then all the stuff is right there in one easy to carry duffle to make a quick get-away. better to carry two smaller items individually. that way when someone robs you of your precious items they only get away with half of your stuff.

Oh, so now we talk robbery. Wouldn't a would-be robber have an easier time taking the whole lot, including the bike, just when you dismount? That way they can get it all, lol.

Are you seriously sugesting that the risk of robbery is as great as theft, and that carrying two bags instead of one big one makes you less of a target?

I wouldn't really worry too much about that. If someone *really* wants all your stuff, they'll get it one way or another.
