Strange angle with my new Tubus Tara rack?
Hello everyone, this is my first time on these forums. Please excuse me if my english is not correct, im from Belgium.
I recently bought a tubus lowrider rack.
As you can see on the pictures, i cannot manage to get the upper arms horizontal. Maybe because of my straight fork?
Can anyone tell me if its okay to mount it oblique / slanted? (and to put oertlieb bags oblique too?)
I have the LM-BF Mountingset for forks without eyelets.
Thanks
Axel

You might be able to get it a bit more level by using a different hole for the upper attachment.
Here's some info about this rack, including a note that it doesn't always sit horizontal.
Tubus Tara Lowrider Bicycle Bike Rack
if you cant get it set up, call Wayne at thetouringstore, he'll probably be able to lend some insight as to whether it's ok to use.

I didn't know there was a difference between rack and fender holes. How can I identify if its one or the other? They seem pretty solid btw.

Here's what Wayne from thetouringstore.com replyed me:
Hi Axel,
Not five minutes ago I send this to a customer who is getting ready to mount a Tara rack on a straight–bladed fork similar to yours.
“Something I didn’t mention earlier . . . when I ask for the mid-fork measurement of the fork tube diameter at a point 6.5 inches above the fork tip eyelet, a lot of customers assume that means they must mount the mid-fork clamp at exactly 6.5 inches up from the fork tip, but that is not the case. There is one advantage to NOT having mid-fork mounting eyelets, especially on straight-blade forks. Sometimes the top-rail of the rack is not as level as you might like it. With the mounting clamp instead of built-in fittings, you can mount that clamp higher or lower than 6.5 inches to get the leveling of the top rail that pleases you. Note that I said “the leveling that pleases you.” A level top rail on the rack is more about form than function. We humans like things level, and we think level looks better. If the rack won’t mount with the top rail perfectly level, that is generally no problem, as the panniers won’t care. They will just go along for the ride.”
So Axle, if you mount the panniers and the work well at an angle. No problem. If they are secure, but won’t stay where you want them, you can visit a plumbing supply or hardware store, and get some mini stainless steel hose clamps. Place them on the top rail just in front of, or just behind a pannier hook – perhaps on the downhill side – and you have just placed a mechanical “stop,” that will keep the pannier where you want it.
They just didn’t make that fork for a front rack.
A few of my customers with a lot of mechanical ability, who have a machine shop handy, have made an extension for the upper bracket that mounts with two bolts to the upper rail bracket and provide another mounting hole to help level the rack. Do try moving the clamp up and down a bit – after you loosen the lower bolts of course. That may help.
Best,
Wayne

Your fork Lacks a place to mount the rack support bar. I see no bolt Boss ..
you need to buy the Tubus Parts IE LM1 fork adapter ..
See View the LM-1 Fork adapter at https://www.ortliebusa.com
also since It's a straight blade Sport-Competition style cross Bike and not a bike with a bent offset in the Blades
you have to lower your expectations on getting the rack any where near Level at all .. (or buy a different fork)
One may be able to take the Ortlieb Bags apart , remake the angle that the top rail Sits on the back of the bag..
Some of their Office rectangular commuter bags offer that option as stock , so the bag sits a bit more level,
though the rail it hangs from is sloped .
[They make them to not get kicked hanging on rear racks] https://www.ortlieb.com/_prod.php?lan...g&biketoy=rear
(edit) better option ..
Or just exchange it for the Tubus Smarti https://www.tubus.com/product.php?xn=63

The SMARTI provides foothold on forks
without the midsection eyelet.
Attached to the fork brake bosses, the
SMARTI fits bombproof behind the brakes.
Panniers hang slightly higher on the SMARTI
than on a normal low-rider. At the same
time the geometry of the carrier is beneficial
for luggage. The handling of the bike stays
sweet tempered, well balanced, and the
steering handy.

Flip your 2 horizontal struts so the holes are upper-most.
there are 3 holes on the struts. Use a different one.
Also your brake straddle cable can fall onto the tyre if your main cable breaks.

Thanks, Fietsbob.
I have the Tubus adapter for mounting on forks without upper eyelets.
So mounting was not a concern as much as having the upper tube out of level.

I made an adapter When I got a Bike where the factory made an error ..in the boss placement .
Used Aluminum stock (cut up some Extruded with an angle-flange).. ,
it had 3 holes in it to take 3 bolts , so the adapter would not rotate on any 2 of them .
use 2 holes in the rack bar , 1 in the LM1.
But I suggest sending that one back and getting the Smarti instead..

My Tara isn't quite level, maybe slightly closer to level than yours, but it works well with Ortlieb SP+. You'll have to fiddle with the lower hook location and angle, but the bags will latch on quite happily when you get it set right. It might be a problem if you were doing a lot of dirt roads, but mine have made it across miles of gravel roads, through a couple nasty road construction zones, etc. with no problems falling off.

This is how my Tara is mounted so I would say yours is right, just that you lack fork braze-ons in an ideal position.

Note Andrew's Surly fork is bent half way down , placing the top mount behind the bottom mount ,
not in a straight line..
Of course the top rail, Axels, can be removed, Modified and re powder coated also ..
and re installed ..
