Bikes: Surly LHTD with a YAK trailer. I may have to ditch the trailer and go to panniers but I'll give it a try and see what happens.

Sage advice.

I always take my bike into my room if I stay in a motel and I think most motel managements expect you to do it. I must admit that there have been occasions when I have been so cold, tired and miserable that I have left the bike unlocked on purpose and wished it would get stolen so that I could go home. Of course that never happens.

I lock my bike up with a decent Kryptonite chain lock. As someone else mentioned, if the bike gets stolen, I'm completely screwed. The tour would be over, and the nice, expensive bike that I put a lot of work into is gone. To me, it's worth an extra couple pounds to make sure it doesn't get stolen. I also practice the theory of making the bike look undesirable. My frame is spray-painted flat black and there are no brand names that aren't taped over or sanded off. Derailers are cheap enough that I don't mind using a little sand paper to de-badge them, and I plan on getting many miles out of them until they don't work anymore or get donated, so I don't care about resale value. Sure, someone who knows bikes will be able to tell I have nice cranks, derailers, headset, etc, but it at least keeps things from looking like an easy sale on CL, etc, and that's what most thieves are looking for.

I have a framelock as well as this very long thin and light ABUS combilock. It's long enough to thread through everything:

I've heard of someone who discretely ties a bell to the bike or to a string to the bike so that if it is disturbed, you might wake up to the sound of the bell.
