overnight trips in NC/SC/GA/TN?

A buddy of mine and myself are looking to do a short overnight trip next friday/saturday. This will be my first "tour." I know it's just one night and will only be around 100 miles, but it's nice to get a small taste when I can to see how I need to pack etc.

We live in the western tip of NC and are willing to drive 1-2 hours to starting point. We are going to form some sort of loop. As of now, it looks like we might do something around the Yadkin River.

Anyone have any suggests or words of encouragements for me?

Check the North Carolina Department of Transportation website. They have FREE maps of multiple bicycle touring routes throughout the state. Your leaving pretty quickly and are unlikely to get them in the mail before you leave so you might look to see if they have online maps available.

I'd start at Brevard and look for loops around there. 276 up to the parkway, down the parkway to 215 down the south side towards Rosman, back around to brevard. If you need more, than look towards Dupont state forest for some good roads. Or... I've done this in south pisgah... use your mountiain bike and do a combo road/offroad loop thru pisgah. Pisgah has much more free camping than your area of Nanatahala. Although most are on dirt roads, many are not that far on dirt roads. Private message me if you want more info.

I've orderd those route maps, it took about 2 weeks to get them. They're fantastic.

Are you talking about the weekend of the 23rd? If so, you should do something that coincides with the Tour of Georgia out near Brasstown and check out some racing on your journey! It's about 2 1/2 hour drive to Brasstown from Waynesville, I'm assuming you're near there. So surely there's a ride within the distance your talking about.
