Certainly the cheapest tickets have to be reserved in advance, which doesn't account for
unexpected delays. For me it was the Hood Canal bridge closing while a big submarine went
by.
Still, for a relatively short hop from Tacoma to Portland, the price isn't gonna break me.
From Portland,(Troutdale), you can ride the Historic Columbia trail to Cascade Locks or
head west & get an unlimited 7 day coastal bus pass for $30 that lets you pick your rides
without having to stick your neck out on 101. At peak summer season 101 is horrendous
requiring unlimited courage or a death wish.
