Cuba's Casa Particulars in the West
Hello,
Looking for advice from those who have gone. If you have been to this area of Cuba please respond!
My girlfriend and I are headed to Cuba in a few weeks and doing a 5 day tour from Las Terrazas to Vinales and vicinity.
Ideally we'd stay in Fierro, then somewhere after Che's cave enroute towards La Palma. Then we're day trippin' Vinales for two nights before bussing back to Havana for 2 nights.
If we needed to stay in Fierro, just after the skyline ride in the book, would we find a casa particular or some place to stay? I usually see reports of people in the larger towns only.
What about in between the smaller towns in this region? Will something always work out? Is there absolutely no choices?
Thank you for any advice or info!
Chilly

meant to put this up earlier, check out and read this British couples experience spending about 2 months in Cuba recently. There may be specific references to the area you want, or at least to get an idea of what it is like there and also to prepare you a bit for being wary of the way travellers are approached, not really theft but more from the angle of just being aware of how things work. Read the journal, its worth it for folks going there.
This couple have done numerous very long bike trips and my feeling is that their account of their Cuban trip is a balanced take on going there.

Thanks! I've read through all the Crazy Guy journals and contacted a few people. It seems like we'll have no trouble with people finding us! Much less the other way around!

I did something similar back in 2007 but route was Havana to Guanajay (large town but no CP but taken in after much negotiation by unregistered casa), Guanjay to Las Terrazas, Las Terrazas to Bahia Honda (couple of CPs), BH to Vinales (lots of CPs), Vinales to Pinar del Rio (lots of CPs) and bus back to Havana.
I doubt Fierro would have a CP but ask where you stay the night before as there are often family/commercial relationships between CPs and they pass you along the network and if you discuss your route they can often help organise accommodation.
