Miss n out strategy

Just looking for any tips. I hate this event and it blows my placing in the omnium down if I do poorly.

The only way I've ever done well in this is to sit at the front and control it, especially if I can get a team mate or other to work with me and block above me. Never go down to the black line though, always up from it a little, so that there's no room for someone to come under you.

If that fails, I try and remain right on the tail of whoever is controlling it.

If that fails and I'm just fodder, or get caught down low and a few places back, I'll let myself get spat out the back ASAP before the next elimination and get up and over the top as quickly as possible.

If all goes well and you find three of you left, sprint before the finish line and then keep the pace up as long as possible. It's a panicky race where people try and conserve as much energy as possible so they'll always slow after the sprint and expect everyone else to. So you drop man three and catch man two off guard and he'll really need to work to catch you.

It's a bit like asking for chess strategy... there are so many variables that are constantly changing, I think the most valuable skill is knowing when/how to react to the unfolding flow. I thought this was a nice primer: https://tinyurl.com/q2k9vnr

Thanks for the tips. I have a better idea of what I'm going to try at least. I like the idea of being in control of the pace or right with whoever is doing it. Also I need to watch for the ebbs and flows as they did seem pretty consistent last time I raced it.

I really appreciate it.

Most of the time you want to be a half wheel up track of the person in front of you. Less draft, but much less chance of being boxed in and completely out of the race.

I think a lot of people who get frustrated with the race get caught at the bottom and stuck. You should try to see this coming and be more proactive, even if it means coasting to the back sooner so you can come up and around. If you are still stuck there come the final straight its too late.

The last second sprinter strategy has worked well for me in smaller races but if its a big field its a lot of matches to burn, and on a short track isn't much chance to recover.

This is a pretty good primer but my experience is that miss and outs tend to be very different at different velodromes or racing scenes. You race locally long enough and the M&O goes one way, and then you go to a different track or a regional meet where everybody doesn't know each other and it is a completely different race. Regional M&Os tend to be super cutthroat and fast from the ***.

One of the things I thin is very important, particularly for local racing (where you get to know your competitors quite well), is that it's very important to vary your tactics. I tend to ride from the back - except when I don't, and get a nice free ride near the front until it's time for me to observe and protect my postition a bit better and I shift to the back. When I'm riding at the back I come around at different times. Sometimes I leave it late. Other times I swing around and come up pretty far pretty dern early, and after the line I float back where I'm sheltered and can see everything. Especially when people get tired they sort of assume that it's going to be a late sprint. Waiting can work really well - but so can anticipating it.

Not that I do them very often but at a club level I try have fun with it if I'm one of the stronger riders there. I'll try box in a few of the other faster guys and ride mostly from the back. If I'm one of the weaker riders I like to sit 1st or second wheel on the outside (normally ends up 2 abreast) and play it safe until it's a small enough group to try manipulate without getting caught out myself.

Usually I get down to the final 3 but by then I've normally got nothing left in the tank (anything longer than 1k is too long) and try leave the sprint till late so I can get a good jump and not have to hold it for too long.

Well I tried it tonight. It was switched to an Elimination from a miss n out. I've been feeling crummy but did a little better and got 4th. Saw I was in a bad spot too late pulled back to go up and the guy under me came up and brushed wheels so I pulled back and that was that.

Rest of the race I was just up in front mostly in the wind but it was easier to keep the guy under me boxed.

I was under the impression that the miss n out was the same thing as an elimination? Its not a race we do here. How does a miss n out work?

Same race except miss and out last three sprint for the win and elimination third place gets pulled just like normal and only 2 sprint for the win.
