I decided to hit up the velodrome after work today (Monday) and was disappointed to hear that there are no longer Monday open time due to both the lines being painted & the Championships being held all through June. So after poring over the confusing website I decided to email one of the track’s contacts who gave me the scoop on open hours for the track
“The track is getting the lines painted on it as we speak and once that
is done the track is open all the time. You can go any time to ride it.
The exception is Monday nights which will be track Championships in
June and Wednesday when it is rented by a local club. We also have
friday night racing for beginners and Thursday night. We will have
Tuesday night training sessions and in July the track will have Monday
night training as well. The weekend is open all the time.”
My plan now is to try again Thursday evening and to go again next Tuesday (May31st) evening as well.
Hey Jeff- sorry about the canceled Monday session...
It's been verified that the lines were painted today. I'm not sure how long it takes to dry (really)... But there is a possibility that Coach Steve Thordarson Smart Cycling will be hosting the Tuesday evening sessions this week. These are similar to Mondays- starting at 6:30 or 7pm and lasting 2.5-3 hours. You'll need $7 (I think) for the session if you already have a license. One day licenses are $4 for training sessions (I believe).
Monday evening sessions will go until the end of August following these Track Championships:
6 June- Kilo, 13 June- Individual Pursuits, 20 June- Flying 200m and Sprint preliminary rounds and 27 June- Team Pursuit prelims and Team Sprint.
The Thursday evening Championships are:
16 June- Keirin, 23 June- Sprint finals, 30 June- Team Pursuit finals, 7 July- Points Race and 14 July- the Madison.
Hmm- I just noticed a couple of things about the schedule-
Monday- 30 May doesn't look to be spoken for with a Track Championship... I bet the Monday night training session will take place then.
Also- Notice the Madison on the 14th of July- We'll also have a cat 3/4 Madison that night... Which means that people just starting now (cat 5) have 6 weeks to figure it out enough to try one of the most enjoyable (torturous) events out there! And if you're looking to upgrade to cat 4- Monday (and possibly Tuesday) sessions count for points. Also- you can race on Tuesdays in Kenosha as a cat 5 (4/5 combined fields).
...And speaking of Kenosha- I'm heading up for tomorrow's races. Can't wait!
