wow, I clicked on this board to ask if there was a velodrome in the area (I've heard rumors about a secretative one), and BLAMO!

I have to second Super Rookie's statement, while I lived in Asheville NC for a month, they have the mellowdrome (the turns aren't banked as hard as a typical velodrome, hence the nickname), which has in the middle a basketball court, a roller hockey rink, a park, and a sand pit volley ball set up. always tons of people there.

Just don't let them do to the velodrome what they did to the ice hockey rink here in frederick. Through some buracratic (sp?) nonsense the rink was made ten feet shorter than an NHL regulation rink. Reason? So that they could not do exhibition games. Don't let them do anything short of a regulation velodrome, otherwise it'll become a pile of scrap wood...

Hello,

This is Velodrome rider forwarding a message to all who would like to have a velodrome:

Hello,

My name is Dale Hughes.
I design and build velodromes.
I designed and built the 96 Olympic track in Atlanta, the 2002 Asian Games Velodrome in Korea and several more in Mexico, Canada and the US. I am currently consulting with China, Mexico and Qatar.

I designed and built a prototype velodrome facility in Rochester Hills, Michigan.

I would like to build a velodrome in your area. I have funding for 1/2 of the cost of the velodrome.

If you have interest in working with me please email or phone 248-961-3705.

Regards,
Dale Hughes

It sounds like they had great progress here! I hope everyone in the DC area can attend this next meeting on the 29th. I'll definitely be there to help out.

I first want to thank all of you for your interests and pledges to support our efforts to build a velodrome in our region. This show of a strong, critical mass of support will be key to our success, whether here in Arlington, or any other possible location.

To update everyone, on October 20, we met with County Board Chairman Jay Fisette and Erik Beach of Arlington County Parks and Recreation to discuss the process regarding development of the North Tract. We also provided them with our thoughts on options for a velodrome in the facility in either Phase I or Phase II.

The next step is at the upcoming Open House, as we have previously indicated. It is our goal that we can achieve one of the following:

1. Keep space available in Phase I layout to incorporate a velodrome during Phase II build

2. Include a velodrome in Phase II space

Here is how you can help at the Open House, Saturday 29:

8:30am Velodrome Rally - assemble prior to the Open House at 2100 Clarendon Boulevard near the steps of the AMC Theater to meet other supporters, refine strategy for the day's meetings. We will split up into Groups (Ride, Site and Building) to cover all the bases. - ALL

9:00am Open House Introduction - Overview presentation by County - ALL

9:30am Focus Groups - Provide feedback and interaction with key groups - Site Group/Building Group

12:30 pm - 4:00pm Interactive Stations - Opportunity to provide individual input/feedback on ideas and options. This is ideal for those that can’t make it in the morning. - ALL

12:30pm - Design Overview - Hear results from the work done in the Focus Groups - ALL

2:30pm - Design Overview (repeat of 12:30pm) - ALL

By showing up and showing our numbers we are demonstrating our need. By showing up and participating we are demonstrating our commitment. Please tell all of your cycling friends, including those who know they want a velodrome as well as those who don't yet know they want one.

Thank you,

Rob Laybourn

I picked this up on CR list concerning
a meeting on Sat 29 Oct to support Velodrome
in Arlington.

Hello Squadra Coppi, below is information regarding an effort
to place a Velodrome in Arlington, Virginia in the north tract
area across the Potomac River from Haines Point. I'm letting
the local bike clubs and teams know what they can do to support
this effort. This would be huge for cycling in our area.
Thanks

The most important times Ron said that the numbers are needed was: the 8:30am pre meeting, the 9am intro for open house, 9:30am focus groups, and anytime 12:30p- 4pm booths for imput.

If you can't make it for the full day, try to be there for any of the meetings.

I know you guys have been doing great work on this.

I was just wondering if you have contacted any clubs that are local to the existing velodromes in the US. I would not be surprised if they would be willing to send letters detailing the local activities and benefits that their commmunities have enjoyed by having these facilities.

This is the site for our local track(SJ,CA): https://www.ridethetrack.com/

Update on tomorrow's velodrome events:

Velodrome supporters:

Just a reminder about tomorrow mornings Velodrome Rally in conjunction with the North Tract Focus Group/Planning session: The most effective way to support our cause is to show up around 8:30am to meet/great other velodrome supporters and get an update on our strategy and tactics. Then, stay for the opening of the session, where County Chairman Jay Fisette will open the meeting, and will likely address/recognize our cycling community needs (velodrome). By being part of a unified “peloton”, we are sending a strong message of our need.

Then, join an organized group ride from 9:30-11:30, which will go across the Key Bridge, and up to Patomac, MD and back to Arlington. You are welcome to stay for the focus groups, though we feel that we will not need dozens of cyclists participating them. Later, after the group ride, come back and voice your individual feelings during the exhibit phase and Open House from 12:30 – 4pm.

See you in the morning!
