New Hour Record

Just in case anyone was interested. From VeloNews:

Czech rider Ondrej Sosenka set a new world hour cycling record at the Krylatskoye Olympic indoor track on Tuesday, Russian cycling federation deputy president Yury Kucheryavy told AFP.

Sosenka covered a distance of 49.700km, beating British cyclist Chris Boardman's mark of 49.441km, set in 2000 in Manchester, England.

The Czech rider was under Boardman's record from the outset, recording a time of 1:15.01 (to 1:17.891) for the opening kilometer. He went through the 5km point over three seconds up, and by 25km had extended his advantage to just under seven seconds. This continued to grow to 18 seconds by 40km.

The 29-year-old Acqua e Sapone rider is a time-trial specialist. The current Czech TT champion, he won the prologue of the Uniqa Classic and the stage 4 time-trial in the Tour of Belgium this season. He also is a past winner of the Tour of Poland and the Tour of Slovakia.

It will be interesting to know what sort of bike was used. When Boardman heard Lance might be interested in going after the record, he proposed a variety of "rules" to apply to Lance:

- that the attempt be made at sea level

- that the attempt be made on a "traditional" style bike

- that Lance be drug tested every day for months before the attempt, and drug tested before, during, and after the record attempt.

- that the blood and urine samples be stored for 100 years, so that if Boardman could not accuse Lance of cheating, perhaps Boardman's grandchildren could accuse Lance of cheating, using the "testing technology" of the year 2105.

Note: I'm paraphrasing Boardman's drug testing related requests. But his proposal was more or less that silly.

The purpose of Boardman's proposal: Boardman wants to claim that HE was "clean" when he set the record and therefore, if anyone ELSE gets the record, that rider must be dirty.

Screw Lance, he doesn't have a chance. Let's get some of the fixie poseurs, who claim to hit 45mph down the Manhattan Bridge, to take a shot at the record. Now, they'd definitely annihilate it.

Sounds stupid, I know, but the difference is one of degree not kind.

There's a very interesting article in Outside mag this month about drug testing that basically says this same thing (not pinpointing Lance). The lead researcher says that current testing is futile because the dopers and their chemists are so advanced and there is so little money to research doping. It will take years for them to know what racers are using today.

fair enough to move this to the track forum, but this is BIG NEWS and NOBODY will see it here. I'd argue that it relates to road racing because the best ever road racer, and legend (Merckx) held an amazing record for SO long!

any danger that these events could have cameras?

I've only ever seen about 1 photo each of the records of Rominger, Indurain and Boardman, and I had to Google all over the place to find a pic of the steel bike that Boardman used in his last shot.

He had 190mm cranks for this event as well. Not a bad idea to go with long cranks if you will only be riding bike on flat ground for 1 hour.

I think with a high forward seat this 190mm could work for some. Maybe not good for a traditional road position though (upright)

I wonder how tall he was?

Was it the Athlete's Hour or the Unlimited Hour? ie Drops and spoked wheels, or aero bars and disks. Either way, I wish this kind of thing got the publicity it deserves. The Hour is cycling's Land Speed Record, 100m dash, Indy 500, Mount Everest. This should be international headline news, but here it is in the depths of the Track forum.

But all credit to the BBC though, who showed Darren Kenny's successful Hour attempt for riders with cerebral palsy or brain damage (cat. C2 I think) at the Manchester World Cup a few months ago. Only about 5 minutes of highlights (not a great deal of excitment really), but they acknowledged his effort all the same.

The Hour is dead, long live the Hour.

It's gotta be the athlete's hour, the unlimited sits at 56 k or so.

It is the Athlete's Hour. The other record is now referred to as the "Absolute Hour Record", which Boardman has at 56.375km.

I agree; it's HUGE news. I put it in the road forum under a slightly different guise
