Rider's Hand Chopped Off During Race
Just in time for Halloween.
Urban Legend or truth? Bladed aero wheels have resuted in accidents involving missing limbs. My lbs refuses to stock them ,allegedly for this reason. A roadie i know says it almost happened to him w/ Spinergy Wheels. I want a Spinergy for the front of my track buildup, but don't want negative kharma, or amputees as a result.
What's truth vs. fiction here?

On fixedgearfever one of the posters(who was asking about a wheelset) said that he is not going to get aero spokes because he saw a trackie lose a finger in a crash due to aero spokes..not a limb..but still would suck...

I can't imagine that normal, round spokes, moving at high speed, would be much friendlier. Fixed geared bikes present enough of a hazard with their rings and cogs as it is. This guy found that out the hard way.

This story has been going around for years. When I got mine maybe 9 years ago I was told about the rabbit that was decapitated by spinergys in a US road race. I raced in may crits before the UCI banned all one piece carbon wheels in bunch starts and many other riders used them too. I have never seen any proof to the stories so I say "Urban Legend". I had my foot sliced badly when my pedal and foot went into the front wheel of an other rider's bike. His spokes were standard.

Look at the flat carbon spokes on Lightweight wheels, they're literally sharp carbon blades...

Crock....Even if a spinning spinergy wheel is like a block of knives it doesnt have the dynamic weight to cut a limb off. I think the only limbs you may find severd, gashed or hacked up are fingers from chain cleaning accidents. I almost lost the tip of a finger last fall from a rag getting caught in the chain ring and pulling my hand with it..........

over at another biking forums last year there was a thread about a guy who had the tip of his finger sliced clean off by his disc rotor. Disc rotor on a mtn bike woudl definitely have the potential to slice a limb off...just not big enough.

That someone was Michele Bartoli, and he was the uci's number one ranked rider in the world. He fell in a double paceline, and his knee went into the back wheel of the rider next to him - it was a spinergy, and it sliced under his kneecap. Quite a gruesome injury. Because Spinergy was a sponsor of his team, the details of the crash were covered up.
They put his knee back together, and Bartoli did come back to race professionally a few more seasons, but he was never a top rider again.
I remember when Spinergy mountain bike wheels came out, they had six pairs of flat carbon spokes, and people complained that sticks would get stuck in there and cause crashes.

Sure, eventually you will want to check the drivetrain by "pedaling" in the right direction, but at that point, fingers and rags should be well clear.

Just how would you get a hand into a spinning wheel anyway?
I've a cousin who lost two fingertips in a spoked motorcycle wheel due to clumsy maintenance. While working in a bike shop between terms I saw a Saturday boy flip off two fingernails in a spinning bike wheel (and boy, did he bleed!). Neither could have got their whole hand into the wheel fast enough.
I say urban legend.
