    Encino vs. ADT - a comparison

    Hello SoCal'rs

    If you wouldn't mind, please expound upon the cultural, racer, and overall condition comparisons between these two velodromes. It appears I may be headed out there in the near future!

    ADT- (almost) state of the art, indoor wood track facility. 250 meter, high banked turns. I believe it is the only track in the US which is qualified to hold World Cup/World Championship events.

    Sounds like my local track.

    Move to Australia!

    Culturally, then play lawn bowls during the week in the centre. The old trackheads at my club are legendary. There's an amazing collection of 60's 6Day racers bikes which the old fellows race on.

    I think it would be quite easy if you really wanted to. Teaching is quite often high on the list on 'required skilled workers' that you can apply for working visa's unlike 'car couriers' which fails to make any list

    Both tracks have good programs and serve pretty much the same population of racers, though for some people one track or the other is a much longer trek so you don't see them as much at the track that's a further drive.

    Both have racing programs, but Encino's is better developed, since they've been doing it longer. This is the first season of regular local racing at ADT and we're still working on building a relatively self-sustaining local program that attracts both riders and spectators. The sizes of the fields at both tracks are comparable, but due to the economics of the facilities, ADT needs to have more riders, and probably more often, to keep the lights on in the long run. Given the way cycling has been going lately, and the turnout for the tour of california, it may actually be possible.

    Probably the biggest difference you'll see in racing is that various pros and national teams are more likely to show up in the local races at ADT (though some pop up at Encino, too). About three weeks ago we had the Polish National Team mop the floor with us in the 1/2/3 field a couple weeks before they rode at Worlds. The various other track pro and some national teams, as well as some international riders and the occasional road pro show up occasionally, and sometimes race with the locals or do one of the structured workouts. There are also a few national team and international riders who train at ADT-- one time Jamie Staff showed up to start his workout just in time to hop into the B field at Roger's race school, allowing a friend of mine to get a view usually reserved for much higher level riders: he got to watch Jamie blow past him in a keirin.

    In the masters fields its probably comparable at both tracks-- there are plenty of ex national team and national level riders in the area who still show up and race. Maybe even a little more at Encino than ADT, though some of them still race (and win) in the 1/2/3 field instead of racing masters.

    Culturally they're both populated by much the same people, but run a bit differently. ADT is privately owned and operated as part of a large sports complex. Roger Young has some structured training sessions (that are very good), a race school (practice races that often include a short lecture), a bunch of open riding times, some times reserved for elite riders, and some clinics for triathletes/time trialists, as well as the usual intro classes. Encino is in a public park run by a non-profit on a slim budget. They have frequent racing, some nice classes (keirin classes, we had a madison training series, some intro to track for road racers), practice races on tuesdays, some open riding time, and the usual intro classes.

    Facility-wise ADT is a *way* nicer track. It's smoother, and I love the wood banking. It also has a nice PA system and when it's raining out it's awesome to be inside at ADT with the CD player going, cruising around the track. Encino is a little ripply, and a little narrow since they raised the level of the infield, and has some other weird features. But when the weather is nice, like last weekend, it's nice to be out at Encino riding in the sun. And once the races get underway you don't think much about what's underneath your wheels anyway, you just ride it.

    My recommendation would be to pick a place to live that's convenient to both tracks and your work-- there's a lot of good stuff going on at both of them, and you'll miss out if you don't go to both regularly. I've even ridden both in a single day a few times-- when traffic is ok they're about 35-40 minutes apart.

    Hi,

    I'll start by saying that I've never ridden at Encino and that it has been refurbished over the past few years.

    Regarding the ADT EVent Center, not much more to say that hasn't been said. I will add that the facility is run by Roger Young. I have worked with several cycling coaches over the years and Roger is by far the best. Tuesday and Thursday evenings is Roger's Workouts where Roger sets a specific program and everyone rides to that program. Roger leads the slowest group at the bottom of the track. Faster groups are on the Stayer's Line and at the top of the track (Balustrade). After the set program, Roger motorpaces the entire group for what he calls "The Game." The Game lasts 15-20 minutes and if your legs didn't hurt after the normal workout they will be hurting after the game. Cost is $10 per session. It sure beats spin bikes at 24 Hour Fitness.

    I am not sure what ZappCatt means by almost state of the art. It doesn't have the best scoreboard for major events, but the other ammenities are as good as anyone could ask -- especially in the US.

    Roger's sessions are actually $20 per session however they do offer discount cards for a pack of ten sessions. Some race teams get even deeper discounts.

    I echo Bittingducks comments regarding the tracks. I respect the differences between the two but if I had a choice hands down I'd pick ADT and that's not just because I live closer to the track either.

    I wish they didn't have to get rid of the old 7 Eleven velo for ADT to be built.

    I had fun at Encino in '91, good climate.

    The "almost" was a pre-emptive strike for the people who would jump in and complain about the infield roof support pilons. This has been a huge topic of debate/annoyance to the long time trackies(not me, I am a newbie).

    I was there for the World Cup this year and thought that it was a great facility. I have never had the pleasure of riding it yet.

    Actually the hike to the bathrooms bugs me more. I generally prefer to drink a lot and risk having to get rid of it, rather than risk dehydration, but the hike up the stairs can really take it out of your legs when you're already cooked. For big events they put portables out back, and for really big events they put the nice hollywood style portables out. The big races go so fast that I don't even notice the pylons.

    As mentioned there is the hike to the bathrooms. For those who have not been there the restrooms are located behind the upper rail behind the seats for viewing. If there isn't racing going on you can cross the track at the start finish line and enter the upper area. If the track is being used you leave the area below the track by entering a tunnel that goes under the track then up a stairway and through the upper doors to the outside and you enter the restrooms from the outside of the building. All the restroom doors are blue and lockable. If you are like me and have a memory that is like a bucket with a hole in it you may exit the restroom through the wrong blue door finding yourself locked out in the rain. I raced X-country yesterday and the bathroom at the park was closer to where I parked my truck than the hike to the ADT restroom. I do love riding at ADT and would go more often (average 3 days a week) except the drive on our freeways here in Los Angeles just plain suck. Yea there is also now the present cost of gas here, double suck...

    Oh yeah, the bathrooms...
    I forgot how much of a hike that was...but I guess I can't complain, since ours are of course outside the track..so we have to wait for the track to clear, leave the facility(on a muddy/gravel/dusty path) head to the restrooms..typical camping/all metal style and go back in.

    I have to correct: Colorado Springs 7-11 Olympic Velodrome has also hosted a World Championship (1986).

    I know that they did in the past, I just thought the UCI had "increased" the requirements somewhat so that ADT was the only one currently eligible. It might have come up in the discussion of the potential veledrome down in Austin.

    Ah, do you have info on this? Or a link I can search?

    The CoS velo is much loved due to it's fast times. Tho it's crappy in comparison to ADT.

    Haven't ridden ADT, but did do a fair bit o' racing at Encino. Until they resurface and increase the angle of the turns (especially 3-4) you need to add a bit of countersteering to stay at the bottom. Once you get used to it, its no big deal. The first few times are 'WHOA!' kinda moments tho.

    MUCH faster laps than Sandy Eggo. Things happen quicker when racing: Oops! There went the winning move... (or Zzzzoommm there I go, winning the race!)

    The new infield at Encino ROCKS! Much mo bettah than the old version.

    For the most part, the racing is excellent. I know Encino has a weeknight racing program (or did when I was paying attention) that helps get you into the groove, so to speak.

    HIGHLY recommended that you try it out! Track racing's a hoot. Before I started racing cross, I told people it was the hardest thing I'd ever done on two wheels while being the most fun. The only reason I say cross is harder 'cause it lasts longer.

    You LA-ers have it so good! Complaining about the bathrooms at an indoor velodrome!

    Riding at Encino was a lot like riding Northbrook except the track is shorter & has a
    steeper bank. The surface isn't as nice, but not nearly as bad as Northbrook used
    to be. People wise it was very similar too. The people at ADT were mean to me when
    I called to see if they had open races, ends up the track was booked for the entire
    week I was there (oh well).

    Anyways I don't think you can go wrong living by either since it takes forever to
    drive anyplace no matter what.

    There wasn't much regular racing until this year anyway. And the home depot center site was never very up to date, so now there's a better one that's kept current with the daily schedule, races, results, programs, etc. at Http://LAVelodrome.org

    And I know for sure they don't have a basketball court in the infield like Home Depot does.
