Does anyone here ride the GT GTB alum. track frame? I was wondering what people thought of it in terms of just over all quality. I tried doing research on the net and couldn't really find too much. Also, if anybody knows, how much were these frames were new, and how much would they be worth used? Hope this isn't too vague. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much
I think they are generally considered very good sprint frames and good all around frames. The design of the seat tube adds a lot of stiffness. I think they were comparable in price to a Pista Concept or Fuji Track Pro when new. I'd guess for the frame alone you might be able to get $250 to $300. really depends on when you sell it and what size the frame is.
I've had mine since '98, have put lots and lots of miles on it on the road, and it's fine. One of my favorite bikes. Strong, durable, ugly frame.
I don't think GT ever sold the GTB as a frame only, but the whole bike cost me less than 700 dollars in 1998. GT made a nicer frame - the Pulse - that might be worth something today, but the GTB will probably only go for 150 bucks or so.
My only problem with the frame was the soft aluminum dropouts (rear fork tips?) - they get chewed up when you bolt the wheel down, and make it hard to adjust the chain slack. A pair of big washers or some chain tugs will solve that problem though.
I use a GT Strike '98 road bike, same general style as the GTB/Pulse but with road geometry. I just converted it to fixed-gear and I love it. I agree the welds are downright fugly though, but I may file them down very slightly to at least smooth them out.
I'm on the hunt for a Pulse (or GTB I guess) for track this summer.
