World Track Championships

Just thought I'd start a general thread on the World Track Champs, which started a few hours ago.

Wiggins has already done an awesome ride - 4.15 for his first qualifier in the pursuit.

The British women won gold in the team sprint.

But does anyone know how the Omnium is scored? I have no idea how to work out who's winning. Is it a simple points system based on placings, or do they work it out on times, like a decathlon?

Also, has anyone found video of the championships on the Net?

"The World Track Championships get underway today on the Spanish island of Mallorca and will be held through Sunday, April 1. Eurosport is covering this event live. Coverage is scheduled to begin today at 20:40 CET (2:40pm U.S. Eastern). At minimum there will be live audio streams . If video streams also go live, we will post links here."

Thanks transplant! I hope they get the live streaming going soon.

oh, and re: the Omnium

"Omnium (Men only):

A gruelling test of all round skills in five different disciplines held over the course of a day. Sprint, 5km scratch, 3km Individual pursuit, 15km points race and one kilometre time trial. Points added up depending on placing in each event. The rider with the lowest points score wins."

that sounds pretty cool.

Anyone know why Kersten DNF'd in the omnium?

Is he crook?

So every rider starts with 100 points? And you get maybe 10 or something for a win? Would it matter for example if you won the 200 meter in 9.7 instead of 10.2?

Every rider starts with zero points, and you have to finish all the events, then they just add up your placings, lowest score wins.

Riding a 9.7 rather than a 10.2 (or more likely an 11.4 instead of a 12 since they're non-specialists) only matters in case of a tie on points-- lowest total time in the timed events ranks higher.

They don't seem to have done it this way at the Worlds. The winner got the lowest points

that's what bd said...?
If you come 1st you get 1 point, if you come 16th you get 16 points. Repeat for all races. Whoever gets the lowest total score wins. They're smart cookies these UCI folks ;)

Yup, something gastric on Wed evening before competition starts; he was dehydrated. Big shame - his kilo ride at the Commonwealth games last year beating Hoy and Quealy was something special. And that's coming from a pom ;)

I concur. A great ride.....brought the roof down.

Apparently was in bed all day before.....straight onto the drip after pulling out.

Found this great poster of Bradley Wiggins winning his gold medal for the individual pursuit, this was a phenomenal ride.
