shimano lockring on formula hub?

I'm a little confused. I tried to put a new shimano lockring on a formula hub (replacing a formula lockring), and I couldn't screw it on by hand past a couple revolutions. Don't shimano and formula both use the same threading? The formula ring goes on and off easily by hand. I don't want to risk stripping my hub, so let me know if I'm incorrect in assuming that shimano and formula are compatible.

Could it have something to do with your cog being a wider-shoulder variety? See sheldon's page:

Also, be sure that you really have the cog well tightened down

Well, I'll go back and try again. I just don't understand why I can easily spin the formula ring down to the cog by hand but not the dura ace. Now that you've assured me that they should fit, it points to me placing the dura ace on crooked. But I can't explain why it's only with the dura ace that I have this issue.
