How do I change a road (QR) axle to a bolt on?

I'm getting a new set of carbon race wheels. Will be buying my first track bike next spring. Ideally, I'd like to be able to use my front wheel on the track if the modification isn't too complicated.

So: how do I change a quick release axle into a bolt-on axle?

I'm looking forward to handing it to some people. Should be fun to be a newb again.

You might be able to use a bolt on skewer which would be as simple as swapping out the QR. I imagine they are track legal, I know people use them at my local track.

Yeah, I have a bolt-on skewer that I used on my disc last year. They're completely acceptable by USAC regulations, and I can't see why any track would have a problem with them.

German national team uses skewers in the front now - so I figure they're legal. Not sure though. UCI rulebook anyone?

the only ones i've been able to find are pretty cheap. i'll be racing with one on my front this season though. i mean, it certainly beats swapping out the axle, especially if you're dealing with sealed bearings.

Nashbar for $10. I use it on my front wheel. Bought a rear track wheel and use my backup road wheel on my track bike. More cost effective than having a track-only front wheel, and no performance loss.

I have seen it done also, both with the world cup guys and club racers also.

I have heard that it may not be the best for a very steep track or heavy sprinter.

I also thought of maybe using my tubular mavic cosmic carbone on the front this way?

I'm planning on using one of these. I use a set on my commuter bike, but the bolts are plastic and overall kinda flimsy. It'll keep a crackhead from making off with my front wheel, but I think I'll spend a couple dollars more and go with this one for the velodrome.

Machine shop

You could also find a local machine/engineering shop and ask them to mimic the skewered axle, only making it with threaded ends so you can bolt it on. But, if the Zipp axle is legal and strong I'd run with that and call it a day. I think I've seen people using those were I race, but I'm not certain.
