Keirin bikes?

I'm looking for a track bike setup with a $400-$700 frameset and I was considering picking up a keirin bike. This bike would be ridden on the track and the only street use it would see is the ride to the velodrome. I'm looking for something that is primarily going to be raced. Would a keirin bike be a practical option or should I look for something else in this price range?

Assuming you mean NJS keirin, there is nothing wrong with that. Just be aware of a few things. The 'keirin' bike doesn't really get you anything outside of Japan except style points maybe. Keirin frames have narrower dropouts which will make wheel choices limited. Since the bike is steel I suppose you could have the dropouts reset but why bother? I'd just look for a used Fuji Track Pro or a Bianchi Pista Concept. It'll be durable for sure.

Most Keirin frames are now spaced at either 120mm or 123mm (an extra 3mm for chain tensioners). Only older frames are spaced at 110mm.

Everything else is pretty spot on.

Keirin frames are old technology these days. Visit your velodrome and see what others are riding - it aint steel.

Not always true.
Steel comes in various shapes (aero) and is still preferred by some trackies. Those riding lugged steel keirin bikes are really only doing it for style points, which imho, doesnt help them win races...so why bother?

The advantage of steel is you can crash it more before tossing it vs alloy.

Would something like an off the peg BJ Vigorelli or used Italian steel for the right price be a more prudent choice or should I just go for alloy?

Mine was a $60 Malvern Star - in winter I put a freewheel and brakes on and it became my road bike. Cheap way to start racing.

Yes.

Also, in a few weeks, their sister site is going to be selling stand-alone Kilo TT frames for $175 shipped. That's definitely the best deal around on a legit track frame.
