Australian pursuits

Can you use aero components (aero-bars, TT helmet) during an Australian pursuit? I would imagine that you can since it's a pursuit race but since there are so many people on the track I could see it being disallowed.

I believe this event is not UCI sanctioned/governed - so it's up to individual race organisers or national federations to decide. Most of the time the event is staged for fun anyway, so going out onto the track with a BT and discs would be a bit OTT.

OK I've waited long enough to find out what an Australian pursuit is, please describe the event.

Basically it is known now as a 'team sprint', albeit with 3 riders instead of 4.

An australian pursuit is when everyone who is racing is evenly place around the track with a holder. When you get passed by someone you are out of the race. The race is over when only one person is left.

I've always heard it more like a miss-and-out where the last two or three sprint for there starting points two laps after everyone else is out.

Correction, I was confusing it with an Italian Pursuit. It has been too many years since I've ridden one.

Australian Pursuit has multiple riders starting around the track. The winner has caught everybody else or has covered the most distance at the end of a pre-arranged time.

I think you got the italian pursuit wrong too. It has more riders then the three normally in a team sprint otherwise it would be either a team pursuit or even shorter then the sprint.

An Italian Pursuit is usually 4, sometimes 5 riders, where I'm from (Australia) - a Team Sprint is 3. I thought I said 4 riders versus 3 in my original post?

You said 3 versus 4.

Is an Italian pursuit held the same way as a team sprint (i.e. - one rider pulls off each lap) but with more riders?

Meaning 3 for Team Sprint and 4 for Australian Pursuit but I can see how it can easily be read the wrong way. I must have been more affected by jet lag than I thought, sorry.

If you want to be pedantic, the Australian Pursuit has been around for much longer than the Team Sprint, so it might be more accurate to say that the Team Sprint is like an Australian Pursuit but with less riders

once again italian and autstralian are confused. The main thing is that the olympic sprint is a common event while the italian pursuit is pretty rare at least up here.

Italian Pursuits are the best we have an all in 10 - 15 riders aside in our Junior Italian pursuit, bugger to handicap but great when it works.

Thanks for the info everyone, the Australian Pursuit sounds like fun maybe we should run them in Australia.

Yes, you have to stop and scull a stubbie after each lap.
