no, it's stupid, dangerous and (hopefully) will get thrown out of the velodrome. what would the point of this be? other than endangering your opponents

No one skids at a velodrome. It ****s up the surface of the track and will get you thrown out.

I've seen guys hop and skip a bit as they slow from 'at least a walking pace' to a trackstand at the end of the first lap. The hopping and skipping is unnecessary at the speed they're going and is probably done to provide an incentive for the following rider to take the lead position. As far as actual skidding like the hipsters do, if you're actually running a good ($$$) track tire you'd likely wear through it in one try. Kaboom! Also, a skid will send the rear wheel DOWN the banking, putting the skidder in a rough spot when it's time to go again.

I posted this on the far better forum, but one time a pack of boring, doofus-looking hipster types showed up at open track day at my local velodrome. A few of us were just doing laps, trading pulls, and while I was happy to ignore these guys, someone who is less annoyed invited one or two of the guys to join in.

When he got to the front of the pack, he kept speeding up and slowing down, and I couldn't quite see what he was doing, but it looked like he was skipping his bike. I didn't want to have any part of that cluster****, so I pulled out and started riding above the blue. When this kid finally got all the way around the track and it was time for him to pull off, he skidded, and the entire field almost went down. The pack blew apart, because no one wants a broken collarbone because some guy watched too many Monster Track videos.

The guy who runs the track wasn't watching, so when the guy came around again, I chided him for skidding and told him why, and to his credit, he seemed genuinely apologetic and welcomed the rules and manners of the track.

None of these guys ever show up for the races, but on their little messageboard, they apparently frequently talk about how they're going to "sneak in" to races, including a local criterium (?). Because, you know, velodromes and criteriums pay for themselves! And also because it's really easy to bring your brakeless Schwinn conversion to a criterium and not be noticed.

are you still missing the point that skidding on the track is strictly taboo? if you do it around anyone that knows even basic velodrome ettiquete you're going to be chastised and chided. to throw a skid in a paceline like bonechilling said shows that you are not only a complete idiot, but obviously have no group riding skills at all because that **** doesn't even fly on the street if you're with your buddies riding around and you have a half ass idea of how not to kill eachother.

oddly enough... watch the Olympic sprint final between Hoy and Kenny. I think it was their first heat, Hoy was messing with Kenny and Kenny - un intentionally I'm sure - skidded a bit on the track.

this thread is giving me a lot of fuel to L O L.

I also did catch Hoy and Kenney's little dance number. That is what got my buddy to message me asking if anyone ever did an intended "skid stop". The evidence is all falling into place. Patiently awaiting pics and more rants.

to all posters here - yes I know there is no point to skidding, etc. at the track.

I posted "I know there is no point (except looking hipster-ish, lol), but i would love a pic or video" as my original post.

But, you started this thread the day before Kenny and Hoy raced in the match sprints. LOL

I know of a video where a guy skids to avoid a collision, he still falls though. Keep an eye out for him at the end of the pack (3rd to last).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0tMhlhnga0

PS. Can we delete every post but the few relevant ones? No ego, just a suggestion to keep things organized for future reference. It's also kind of annoying to read a bunch impolite pontificator's useless comments, especially when they are wrong. I'm not trying to be offensive, I guess I'm just annoyed that to find a post on topic I have to read 15 off topic posts. I suppose this last paragraph was just as bad.

Cheers,
Chema
