Anybody have experience with both of these wheelsets? I'm trying to get myself into a relatively cheap yet still somewhat competitive track set up and have been presented with deals for around the same price...

Miche Pistards ARE Deep V's, rebranded.

You're better off building a cheap set of tubulars to race on. 32/36h tubular box rims to loose ball track hubs of some sort or another.

A track specific looseball tubular setup is *that* worth it, when on a prope 'drome, especially on the boards.

That being said, it's not like you can't be competitive on clinchers, but building a set of deep v's at this point is kind of a waste of time when you can get a decent used Zipp 440 setup for the price, and I know what I'd do with my cash.

where are you finding used 440's for that kind of cash? If i could find anything like that I wouldn't even be asking about the cheapo stuff

Jeez, I thought my post came off as unbiased... well, the reason I promote tubs is 1) he wants a race wheelset and 2) my own personal experiences racing tubs vs. clinchers. However, you can also usually find NOS tubular rims for dirt cheap off eBay and elsewhere.

i disagree. for tubulars to be worth it you'd have a dedicated set of race wheels using vittoria pistas, not something you can train on and use for your everyday wheels. and seriously do you want 36hole box section rims on your race wheels?

if you are looking for a set of all round wheels at a decent price then clinchers with a good set of tires like conti supersonics are perfectly fine. if i was you i'd look at the deep v's with the best hubs you can afford within your budget and if possible look at ovalized spokes like cx-rays or aerolites. these will be good training and race wheels. over time, if you can afford to relegate them to training wheels and buy a nice set of carbon tubular race wheels, then fantastic.

for the record, i'm more of a mass start rider (though do pursuits as well). in mass start events i've got 3 wheel options, 30mm niobium rims with 24/24 cx-rays and supersonics front and back (my training wheels), 50mm gigantix carbon tubulars 24/24 cx-rays and tufo s3 195g tires (indoor training/outdoor race), or 85mm x-treme carbon front and zipp 950 rear disc with vittoria pistas (indoor race).

if i race inside on any of those wheels in a mass start event, i'll tell you now the choice of wheels makes absolutely no difference in race results.

I'm almost certain that the rims they use are Ambrosio FCS28. Ambrosio has a wheelset that is almost identical, and it uses both the FCS28 rim and Miche Primato hubs. However, I think the advice given is sound, although Pistards are probably one of the nicer prebuilt wheelsets.
