Can someone explain that stem and bar setup? It looks like he's got them jacked up above to saddle level. If you posted this in the Road forum, you'd have a dozen people saying your frame is too small. But he just set a world record, so obviously there's some method to that madness.

The handlebar height is set higher to help the rider breath more effectively. Aerodynamics are not as critical since he is slipstreaming a large upright object.

Does anyone know how long those cranks are? By my calculation he was turning about 96 RPM @ 66.4 kph, which would allow him to torque the gear with very long cranks.

Barrettscv is correct re. positioning. Motorpaced riding is typically done in such a position, as can be seen in the photo Superdex posted.
FWIW, for many years (my years included) motorpaced racing was almost exclusively the province of older, semi-retired riders, ex-pros, etc., as it didn't draw crowds (it's actually kind of boring to watch, after the initial spectacle has worn off) so didn't pay much, especially considering the additional dangers involved. So there's really nothing too special about respectable performances turned in by an older man. Reading through the list of world motorpacing champions will produce multiple 40-50 year old winners.

I've seen dernys for sale from the 1900s (before 1910). They typically had gargantuan motors (1500-2000cc), and I've heard they made quite a motoring spectacle belching flames out of open pipes. The motors were huge, bigger than street MC of the time, because the technology of the day was such that just your usual 1000cc wouldn't go fast enough to really work the bike rider.

Meh. "Stunt" records...
Any one of us could go set the "no handlebars" record, or the "flat tires" record, or the "one legged" record. And no one would care, other than you, your mother, and maybe three guys on the internet.

The heaviest weight dangled from a swallowed sword is 25 kg (55 lb 1 oz) and was achieved by Thomas Blackthorne (UK) on the set of Lo Show Dei Record, in Italy, on 19 April 2009.
Lots of people would find lifting 55 pounds an accomplishment...
