New to the Track

In fact I've never been on one.

I am training hard to do the kilo and pursuit.

I have mainly been a tester these last 3 years and have done long rides on the road. But due to 5 crashes I have gotten sick of the feeling when I hit the concrete so I'm binning road stuff and concentrating on the Track.

Also returning to erging after 3 years away. I loved that when i did it and won 2 world titles at it.

Any advice for how to train for the kilo and pursuit would be most welcome.
Thank you.

Welcome.

To put it short:
If you want to compete at a high level, then you will likely improve much faster under the guidance of a coach. A coach can help you not only with training, but equipment and strategy decisions.

I would recommend that you take on a local coach, especially at first to help sort out lots of things that a remote coach just can't do over the phone and via email.

The key to finding a good coach is to ask around and see who's name keeps coming up as a response. There will probably be lots of coaches that are willing to take you on, but a track-specific coach that has expertise in the kilo and/or pursuit disciplines will probably be best.

...that being said, you can also do it yourself. The hard part will be:

a) Finding training programs on the internet
b) Sorting through the dozens of programs to separate the wheat from the chaff
c) Making a custom program that suits you

Many thanks for the response. I'll try to find a coach around the Ealing area then.

Here's looking forward to the London track opening....

Keep us posted.

Feel free to ask more questions. Specific questions (especially about equipment, events, and basic strategy) will get better responses.

Welcome to the sport. If you've done Erging at a world class level, then you certainly know how to suffer! Suffering is the #1 ingredient in making a good cyclist.

This:

Is not much different than this:

I see there is an erg in the corner. Perhaps SCH uses that too?

I averaged 1.39.5 for the 2k when I set the WR for 55-59 lwts, still stands.

I can't wait to get stuck in on the track.

Is there somewhere where all the age group records are? I'd like to see how close I can get to them.

How do people erg competitively? When I was rowing the erg was just the most horribly painful and boring thing ever.

At the major championships they link up to 200 machines and they all start at the same moment. On your screen you can see who is leading, what position you are in and who is behind you and the distances involved. It can get quite exciting, I seem to remember a dead heat on something like 5.54.6 with the 3rd guy about 1 tenth behind, amazing.

When you get fit specific on the erg it gets easier, I remember sitting straight down on the erg, no warm up and pulling a 6.50.0 as the warm up with no problem at all.

Check out https://concept2.co.uk/forum/blog.php?u=2491 they are a great community and very supportive. This is a link to my blog. See you in a race sometime?
