Thanks for the info, everyone. Might just do the Mavics if I can't find carbon clinchers.

In a perfect world I would just build my own carbon clincher 35-40mm rims, Sapim bladed spokes, white/CK fix/fix hubs. Sadly a) expensive and b) I don't have the requisite skill to build a wheel.

P.s. hamfoh, this is very strange but you and I will have almost the same setup for fg bikes. My Bolt will be the speed machine and I'm turning my 722 into a sweet townie (similar to yours). CREEEEEPY.

Carleton,

Kinda thinking about wheels (not really any time soon). Assuming a 50mm (1755g) set and a 88mm (2147g :o) set are the same price (Planet-X) would the aero benefit of the 88mm be greater than the weight benefit of a 50mm? Also, for outdoor track use, would something as deep as an 88mm give me troubles if the wind picks up?

Side question, I know there's a ton of info on RBR about the ebay china carbon wheels, but do you know anyone personally using these? Any feedback from them?

One more: Is a 24H rear enough for track use? (Assuming a carbon wheel)

I'm only on page 12 of this thread and am enjoying it immensely. It's entertaining and educational. Feel like I'm getting to know you, Carleton. Have to comment on the above part of the thread. Have to admit, I thought your avatar was Alfonso Ribeiro from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and you were making some kind of self-deprecating joke. Wasn't until I saw another picture of you earlier in this thread (albeit a heavier you) that I realized your avatar really is you.

oh the reynolds clincher sdvc 66s or whatever? i got them for 450ish neener neener :)
haha sorry. but yes incredible wheels, just as incredible price. i remember the same seller was just listing them like crazy, 2 at a time every day, for a few weeks. i must have watched a couple dozen, gotten outbid just as many times. i was always afraid i was going to lose out on the last pair (i basically had 500 to spend and threw out a 500 dollar bid at the last second everytime). i even saw a pair go for 430ish, but most went for in the 500-800 range

sorrynotscrod

Dear Carleton, What is a chain that doesnt stretch much? something affordable- Also what chain do you use on the track? Starting to eat up my cogs):

Scrodzilla 05-08-12 08:02 PM

Since when does taking pictures of your bike wear out the drivetrain?

Don't use sh*tty cogs.

Where there's an evilcryalotmore, there is a scrod to tell him he does not ride his bike.

Did you take those aero bars off of your bike yet evil?

Seriously. I have cogs that are years old that are barely showing signs of wear.

Dear Carleton:

A while ago you posted that at a small enough femur/torso angle, the hip flexors stop working.

Occasionally I like to perform one legged pedal (OLP) drills, along with various other drills, on easy days. My lunch ride today was one of those days.
To test the hip angle thingy, I performed my OLP drills in the drops. I noticed that they were much harder, and if I bent my torso all the way down, I couldn't get the pedals over the top of the stroke at all.

Question: Is hip flexor engagement trainable at smaller angles? If so than I would like to always perform these drills in the drops to make me smoother during full-gas efforts that have me getting real low.

I got plenty of weird looks from ppls as I repeatedly cruised up and down the same street at 10mph, in the drops, with only one foot clipped in.

thx

This provided an amusing visual. Thanks.

TMonk 05-09-12 02:53 PM

a couple ppls asked if I was OK, but that happens even when doing OLPs on the tops.

most looked either confused, or disapproving.

I don't think it's trainable to make them work at small angles. I think it's an on/off thing.

BUT, you can train them to be stronger for when they do engage.

Also, I think some people adopt a rounded back to keep the hip open and activate the hip flexors while bending to get lower. I'm not sure if this advised.

thx

doing OLPs in the drops kinda sucks anyway.

Go with shallow before you buy a deep set. When I'm not using my fancy wheels, I race on 404s.

Ask your track questions in the track forum.

jpsawyer 05-10-12 07:51 AM

I remember when I lived in Colorado Springs I went to see a track race when I was younger and there was a one legged racer. At the time i was like 10 so I really knew nothing about track racing but i remember it still being very impressive.
