Cervelo T1- Arrived damaged. Your opinions??

Hey guys & gals,

I bought a cervelo T1 as I wanted to enter the realm of track racing. This bike will see nothing but the track as I have a dedicated street bike. Now, I have something on my hands I'm not sure how to deal with.

Today, Thursday, was the glorious day! I woke up in excitement as I knew my T1 frameset would arrive today! So, I went to a meeting at around 3:30, got to the LBS and paid for the rest of the frame. I also wanted to inspect for myself so they brought it out. As soon as the LBS rep came out he said, "okay, i just want you to know I'm already taking care of this..." - This cant be good, can it?

Well, it's not. Turns out the seat post clamp was jammed further down the frame due to poor shipping and now it has two blemishes in the paint on either side, about the size of a q-tip end. I am pretty discouraged with this as it's not a cheap frame. At all.
My confidence is shot just a bit. Anyway, this is what they offered...

1. I can get 10% back off my purchase price of 1300 and they will build my bike for free once I get all the parts. In addition to this, the LBS is going to try and match my frame color in the affected areas. I have no worries with this as they are an authorized Cervelo dealership w/ PLENTY of their merch.

2. I can wait 15 more days to get it sent out, resprayed by cervelo, then resent. The frame hasn't been damaged enough to affect the integrity of the frame. I wait for fifteen days for paint.

3. I can take the frame set, build it up ( I have yet to get ALL the parts ) and then once 2011 oct. comes around, Cervelo said they will strip my current T1 and give me a 2012 T1. Free of charge, I'm assuming since there was no mention of price. However, this is not always certain. Problem with this is, I don't want to have the frameset be used to the point where more blemishes come about and cervelo says no, we can't replace. Not sure if LBS will refund the 10% and I will not get it touched up by them. I think there will be extra costs because the lbs rep said I'd have to keep in close contact with them and that cervelo and the lbs will work prices out in the background. Not sure if that means free to me or not.

I plan on speaking with them on saturday about the matter. I am going to try and contact Cervelo as well. I know I can get ahold of them, but just not through their website - which btw offers no kind of serious problem solving on this level. More like, "got a FAQ:?" haha.

Thanks for your input. Cervelo, I went with you because you were the high end, top - notch stuff with a SOLID rep. Now this. Anyway, thanks guys!

You going to mass start race it or just TTs?

If you're going to do mass start, I'd go with #1, then you won't feel as bad when you get more nicks on it, because it's already blemished.

But that's just me-- when I got my TCR Carbon frame I was super careful with te buildup etc, kept it in the plastic the whole time til I had to take it off to put the wheels on. Then once I started racing it I stopped thinking about it. Pile it up in the car with a couple other bikes? Sure. Stuff it in the locker next to my locker-mates' bikes, with no protection? yeah, whatever. Once I start racing a frame it's just a piece of equipment that I expect I'll destroy one day-- no sense in worrying too much about it.

If you're going to just do TTs on it and are into having your equipment be immaculate, I'd go with #2, unless you can confirm that they'll really do #3 for no cost.

Did you drop a grand on a frame because it has the prettiest looks of your choices, or to get a very well built frame? It seems like you are making a big deal out of something very minor. Saving 10%, plus the $60 or so most shops charge for a build is a pretty good deal for something they dont have any control over.

Oh, it was by far the least of the pretty, Kayce. haha.
It's a bit bland, the design anyway - IMO. but I know the quality and R&D has been done top notch. Again, why I went w/ Cervelo.

The reason why I'm making a big deal is because I don't expect to have this sort of thing happen when I spent that much money. I mean, sure it DOES happen. - it did happen? lolol.
I too am leaning towards number one as I don't mind knicks here and there - if I did them, ya know? Yeah, the shop is doing a great thing for me and I even told the guy that I really appreciate how he's handling it.
Thank you for your feedback kayce! (:

Biting duck! I'd like to do mass starts, yes! And there's no way to confirm that number three would be definite as it's months from now, and well everyone's opinion's and outlooks change with time. Ah, well, I'm going to give them a call right now and see what the bit is on all this.
Btw, would my bike fit be any different in a TT than it would normally? I was looking at aero bars and wasn't sure if the ergonomics are different. Thanks a ton!

It's pretty common for track riders to just have a second set of bar/stem and sometimes saddle/seatpost for TTs. You can swap those out on a track bike faster than you can change gears.

I'd take that 10% back. They're going to touch it up anyways so you probably won't even notice unless you're really looking for it. Maybe they'll even give you a fit on top of the assembly?

That third option is pretty good, too, but like you said it is kind of iffy. Maybe get something in writing?

Overall, it shouldn't bother you too much. I'd be irked if my new $1300 frame had some blemishes, but it seems like your LBS and Cervelo are really willing to work with you on this one, which is great!

Not sure, LBS nor Cervelo would divulge any information on the 2012 model.

Anywho, I picked up my bike today and will mock up the bike w/ a crap wheelset and my dedicated stem/bar & seat combo as the guy there said he'd fit me for free!!! I'm pretty happy with how things turned out. Thanks for the input guys! I'll post up my bike in both the thread here & the SSFG thread. (: Good parts are on the way.
