Can you ride a bike with different sized wheels on the track?
I was wondering if you could ride a bike on the track with a smaller wheel in the front like a pursuit bike? Reason I ask is because I want to try out the custom bike my friend/mentor made a few hears ago that's just collecting dust now.
My track is encino.

It is against US Cycling rules to do it during a race. Your bike must have the same sized wheels. But depending on the track rules you could go around and mess around during a free ride.

I've been going to his classes, guess I'll ask him when I'm able to ride again.

Depending on what he says I might switch out the bars to drops.

But, I just read over the 2013 USA Cycling rule book and didn't see any mention of both wheels having to be the same diameter. However, I'd swear that I'd seen it before.
The UCI rule is:
The bicycle is a vehicle with two wheels of equal diameter: the front wheel shall be steerable; the rear wheel shall be driven.
1I1(e): Bicycles must meet current UCI technical regulations at events that select 17 - 18, U23 and Elite riders for international competition or national teams. All bicycles used in National Championships (for age 17 and older riders) and NRC races must comply with the current UCI regulations. At the discretion of USA Cycling, UCI rules may be adopted or modified for Masters National Championships.
That's probably not true, though. I'm probably missing the rule somewhere. Tired eyes.
Have a look for yourselves: https://www.usacycling.org/usa-cycling-rule-book.htm

Switching the bars to drops on such a small headtube on a 650c front end will have you ridiculously low.
Your best bet is to:
1) Use the bars that are on it.
2) Ride it for fun.
3) Ride it in time trials only.

Yeah I'm aware of being too low, but he mentioned the bars might be able to go a bit higher. I've been starring at it for a few years now and always wanted to try it out. Plus it would be cool to show up to the track on a old school custom bike. Instead of something that anybody could buy and race.

I could have sworn the same size wheel requirement was dropped from the rule book last year, but I'm looking through my copies of the rule book going back to 2010 and they all have the same writing in regard to wheels.
On a side note, the new rule banning a visible electronic device display in track racing is pretty interesting.

Is that a new rule in the US? As the UCI has had a rule in place quite a while against visible pacing devices.

I remember riders being told during time trials that they had to hide their screens. I always assumed the rule was there.

Pretty stupid rule really. I rode our State Masters Pursuit today with my SRM screen taped over. But at the same time I was allowed to have a friend walk the line against my planned schedule...

I like the rule personally. Part of the skill in running a persuit is understanding how to properly pace yourself. And with a computer read out you don't have to do any mental work. No matter what outside help you have to do some work yourself.

Yeah, add it to the list of UCI silliness.
A coach's job is to keep you from having to think. Just believe and do.
Also, training eliminates thinking during races...it's all reflexes.
Computers are a just the sport progressing.

Tell me about it! No shoe covers either with the latest rule change. UCI - tackling the big issues...
What gets me is how inconsistent the commissares are enforcing the rules. At our Masters events they go over our bikes with the test jig, scales, calipers and check all our gear. Yet in international events there are numerous indiscretions such as helmet modifications - visors fitted to helmets that don't come with them and taped vents to name just a few.
