Crank Heel Clearance
 

My bike came with SRAM omnium cranks, and they're just not working for me. I'm wondering what other options are available that won't break the bank and have good ankle clearance. It looks like everything else uses a different bb, so I'm already planning on buying one, although it's a bonus if I don't have to.

Frame's a Giant Omnium, if it matters.

I know what you mean. Basically, your heel hits where the crank arm attaches to the BB, right? This was a problem on some older model SRAM Rival cranks, too (2010 or earlier?).

I like to ride with my feet close to the crank arm, too. I use Dura Ace and SRM (uses Dura Ace spec). I don't think you'll have any problem with Dura Ace cranks.

No, but I'd be concerned about increased chance of injury if i start changing the width significantly from what I ride on the road. I'm not thrilled with spending +/- $400 though either. There isn't a slowtwitch forums of the track world I don't know about is there?

Sugino 75 is also great and a bit cheaper than DA.

Is there a big difference in ease of installation or maintenance required between square taper and octalink bb's? I've never used either.

No. Both are easy.

Using square taper, you have lots of inexpensive options.

If I remember correctly, the Sugino 75 BB is a caged ball bearing system that requires basic maintenance. Taking it out, cleaning, regreasing, etc... maybe once per season, or more often if you like doing that kind of stuff. But, you can just as easily buy a sealed bearing system that is just as good.

You'll need the same type of crank puller for both Dura Ace and Sugino.

Sugino 75 is a great option and easy to find. They even come in a few different colors.

I used a Sugino 75 crank and BB for four or five years. Every season I'd wonder if I needed to repack the BB, so I'd take the chain off and spin the cranks and listen and feel for the BB's smoothness.

I never needed to repack the BB.

So fast, so smooth.
