I switched to a zipp rear disk last year and was surprised that I did not have issues with slippage with the 5mm bolts. I still worried about it and likely changed my cogs less than I might otherwise because of it, but it never slipped even once. I do have the oversized bolt heads that give you more surface area. I am in the middle of the power hitters, so not top power, but not on the light side either.

at 6'4" and 230lbs, I don't find it too difficult to pull wheels as is!

Those only work with the narrow dropouts on steel frames. Unless that's what you've got, that won't work. But they do make wider one's for aluminum and carbon frames.

Call around. Some shops still have the Shimano shoe oven thingys. I saw one in a local shop about a month ago.



It's a long-shot, but may work. Start with the high-end tri shops.

Is there a reason why you don't see many people use trispokes on the track? Also, I have an old disc wheel that does not have threading for a lock ring and the previous owner told me I should be fine on the track. Is it ok to run without a lockring?

Is there a good site/section for used track gear? I'm used to picking up most of my used road stuff of of ebay/slowtwitch but neither seems like a good option. Looking currently for a set of bars and a carbon rear wheel

There is a for sale/wanted for Marymoor in the forums at velodrome.org. Carbon rear would be lower on the priority list. If you also do road time trials a Zipp disk with a conversion axle is a popular choice and you can find them from places like slowtwitch but make sure it is a version that can be converted. When you get to Thursday nights stop by at the rentals or the lap cards.

It depends, if you are talking about the Specialized/HED 3 then people don't use it because it's not that stiff. But I've seen people using Vision/Corima 3 spokes.

It depends on the local track/people/commissary. It's fine as long as you know that you should not put back pressure on the pedals (and you shouldn't do this ever on track).

I ride a trispoke on the track, I would not on the rear because of the stiffness and weight issue, but I still think it is one of the fastest wheels for pursuit and the like. Disk is the best in the back for me.

What? you put back pressure on the pedals all the time on the track. Why would you say you should not do this?

As for having one or not, it is possible to back pedal a cog off, but it is very very hard if put on tight enough and after a couple of jumps. I do not use a lockring, and I have been fine in many many races, and I have never had an official question this.

yeah, totally agree with that, stopping the wheel is very bad. As is over braking, just wanted to make sure they knew if they went without a lockring it can work, but that they need to be careful with it.

I have a HED3 trispoke on the front and an old, said to be, Nisi rear disc that doesn't have threading for a lockring. This is the wheelset combination I am currently using on my road TT track rig and haven't had a problem yet. I do not skid so I don't think I'll ever back pedal the cog off. I want to transfer this wheelset to my Langster Pro once I start racing on the track, intro classes starts in July for me.

she walked into the tiny coffeeshop where I am sitting this am, was fumbling looking for her wallet so I hopped up and got it for her... we chatted for a minute, I hadn't realized that she'd moved into the neighborhood.
Also humorous, I was working the pits at the Marymoor GP last year when Hammer came up to set records and take money, so I talked to her while prepping Hammer's bike and I've talked to her a variety of times when she comes in to my work to have our head mech do her wrenching- and I think she sorta-remembered-me-but-not-quite... fine w/ me, I'm a little fish as these things go.

Q: wanna know how good she is at stepping up the game?
A: She just came over the top of the $500 prizes offered by Hammer and Bausch with quite a bit bigger prizes, across a bunch of events, and across all jr ages.

What would happen if a road-rider-turned-new-track-racer tried to track race on a 531 Trek Elance frame with otherwise track-appropriate components and cockpit geo?

Would he just race and be fine, maybe not as fast as guys riding stiffer/lighter frames, or are we talking possible warps in spacetime?

It would probably be fine. Might handle funny if the track is steep. You may need to watch the bottom bracket height though.

Word... track is 43. The BB is low, and that's actually probably my main concern.

I would not recommend road frames at the track. It is a pedal strike issue and that depends on the track. At the Superdrome in Frisco, TX, the banking is 45 degrees but the surface is rough such that sprinters during match sprint competitions will slow down at times on the banking and if the cranks are too long or insufficient bottom bracket clearance, there will be a pedal strike. I watched a guy on a road frame hit twice and slide down the track and took himself out of the competition.

At tracks like Hellyer that is a 333 meters and 23 degree banking, it is not a problem.
